This hide was inspired by the true story of a peculiar cache that was found here more than a decade ago when there was no such thing as geocaching.

On December 4, 1993, a deer hunter found an unusual cache here. It was found in the midst of a mysterious site that appeared to be some kind of a shrine. The centerpiece of the site was a large triangular rock with "Tony + Joyce, My Lady ~ My Love" carved into it. This rock was flanked by handmade stone walls that had traces of a residue that appeared to be wax from candles that had burned there and an unopened pack of cigarettes tucked neatly under a glass bottle was set up on it. An empty picture frame was nailed to a nearby tree and a faded Polaroid photograph was found at its base. The cache was found beside this makeshift altar under a large flat rock. It was a coffee can that contained a small picture of a woman in a bathing suit, a six-inch statue of a boy and girl hugging, and a half-dozen pieces of female undergarments – panties in the woods!

The authorities were notified and the state police in Greensburg were called in to investigate. They brought in a team of ten searchers with bloodhounds but no evidence of foul play was found. Nevertheless, it was decided that the mystery of this strange site and the cache of panties in the woods warranted further investigation. They were concerned for the safety of the woman in the pictures because they thought that she might possibly be a crime victim. Who was she? Was this Joyce? What had happened to her? Was she in any danger? Did she or Tony have a permit to hide this cache of panties in the woods? The investigation dragged on for almost two weeks before the mystery was solved.

If you want to know the end of this story, you'll have to find the cache…

Note: I swear that I didn't make this stuff up! This really did happen and my account of it is factual. But that isn't the half of it! In my quest to find the perfect hiding spot, I found the actual site where this happened! I was aiming for a spot true to the newspaper accounts which described it as being "at the face of a steep hill, about 150 yards from a tower complex along Weaver Road in Forbes State Forest". Try to imagine my surprise when I stumbled across THE rock with "Tony + Joyce" etched into it! It's still legible! I swear that I absolutely did not create this graffito for this cache! I found no other evidence of the shrine that was here once upon a time but if you do happen to find a coffee can with panties in it, you've found the wrong cache!

This cache is in Forbes State Forest. Permit expires: 12/02/11

Cache on! I am pleased to report that the permit for this cache has been renewed. I have also obtained photocopies of a newspaper article about this incident that I am going to put in the cache just as soon as I can get up there. This may be awhile because it's not easy to get anywhere near this cache in the dead of winter. If you have already found this cache and are interested in receiving a copy of the article, please contact me through my profile.

I've been dying to know the end of this weird story ever since this cache first went up years ago. When I saw its permit was about to expire, I enlisted a good friend for a quick adventure.

I greatly enjoyed the drive over - made me want to do more hiking in the nearby parks. Thanks for bringing us here.

We found the etched stone and both caches easily. We signed the logbook, took a few pictures, and moved on.

Thanks for sharing this story and shrine. It's amazing that you managed to find the exact location!

This has been on my wishlist for years. Today happened to be the day. I didn't realize how close we could have driven but the walk was nice. We parked below the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail and followed a gated access road. Once we got within .19 miles, we made our own path through the woods. My wife found the names carved into the stone before we found the cache. The story is almost creepy but, I guess, understandable. TN and left a large ball. Saw two deer and a turkey heading back out to Route 30. Thanks again QM.

I've been wanting to find out the end of this story for a while now... Today we finally sought out the cache and the end of this strange tale. My 23 yr. old stepdaughter was visiting us from Colorado for a few days, so we wanted to take her on her first caching adventure. We all enjoyed this one and found it easily enough. Got a kick out of seeing the old coffee can and the etched words. Neat area and a fun cache - Thanks!

Duh.

The new cached had some panties in it (kinda gross). We moved those with a rubber snake (which came in handy), took some cool kiddie sunglasses and left a rubber smiley face figurine.

Fun cache. We enjoyed finding out the end of the story.

Found with lux on our way home from Burning Micro. Wondered about the outcome of this for a long time, now I know. :)
One of the easier (and probably THE quickest) Quest Master cache I've done. Found the rock with the carvings and Lux spotted the cache quickly thereafter. Looks like the semi-circle of rocks very near the carved rock is probably where the shrine was... at least that's where I envisioned it. We signed and quickly made our exit though cause the bugs were eating us alive. Thanks for the cache and the intrigue!

Fourth and final find on a day of solo caching. Found it around 4:00PM. This one was fun! Probably more fun than a guy in his 40's should have in the woods...
by himself...
with women's panties!!! Hehehe!

Found the actual rock.
Found both caches easily.

The panties were wet...

Great hiding spot!
Took nothing and left a Pickle 99.3 keychain, a racecar, and a blue and white hackey sac with a goofy face on it.
Signed the logbook and rehid the cache as well as it was when I found it.
I really enjoyed reading the rest of the story.
I've been curious about the outcome ever since I've read about this cache.

Thanks, QM, I really enjoyed this one!

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny! You sure did surprise me with this cache. No long hike up steep hills and across knee deep creeks.

Just an easy park 'n' grab. I was able to drive right up to the towers without any problem. So easy to find that even Mrs Possum was able to go back to the car and bring the stickers I use in the logs and find her way back.

This was a really cool cache. That is something that I did expect from you and I was not in the least bit disappointed. Not just a clever and true story but an even more clever hide.

Because this was our 100th GC.com cache (I wanted to do one of yours to commemorate the occassion), I was able to convince Mrs Possum to give up her panties for the "wrong" cache container. She was quite apprehensive about doing it and made me stand guard against other cachers and muggles as well as the native inhabitants of these woods. What a brave gal she is.

Found the wrong cache at first but did finally come across the actual cache with the log book and stash. Took the Cinderella Frisbee and left a Yo-Yo in this right cache. Left a pair of black G-string panties in the "wrong" cache.

Also took a copy of the conclusion to Panties in the Woods because I want to keep the printed cache page and the conclusion as a momento of cache 100.

Before I left this morning for a day of hiking on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail and the GeoSummit, I made one last check of the geocaching.com website because I knew that Questmaster was releasing a cache into the wild that day (even though he was currently in Peru). Being up on the mountain before 6am, I probably could have scored a FTF but to be honest, it’s not about the FTF and I had a lot of hiking to do before the picnic so I saved this one for the very last one of the day.

And, as such, the tracks had been pretty well trampled through the ferns down to the cache site. It was an easy find and while I was signing the log and taking my picture with the enclosed camera, I saw the “bonus” cache. Is this for real or is merely a disturbing replica? Either way, Questmaster, you are sick man.

This was the first cache of the day for Nellsnake crew members #1 and #4. We definitely did not approach this one the easy way--this is the last time I will trust Microsoft MapPoint for directions. We approached this one from the west in the Outback, which entailed a 4+ mile drive through rugged 4WD trails (a.k.a. Felgar "Road") that pushed this vehicle to the limit. When we finally got to 0.7 miles from the cache on Weaver Road, we encountered a closed gate, so we hoofed it from there. It was actually a quite pleasant walk over to the cache. We noticed a family of falcons perched atop the tallest of the radio towers on the way to the cache. We found the actual cache fairly quickly and signed in at 10:45 a.m. as the third visitors of the day. We saw the infamous etchings on the nearby rock but unfortunately missed the bonus "cache". We hiked back to the car and thankfully discovered that although the gate was latched, it was not locked. So, we let ourselves through and continued over to the nearby event cache, where we had quite an enjoyable day. Thanks for placing another interesting cache, QM!
