Another Quest Master cache in the environs of Dunbar, Pennsylvania.

I realize that I have already hidden a lot of geocaches in this area but I decided that it could stand at least one more. This one is hidden in a remote part of State Gamelands #51 near Elk Rock which is on the Pennsylvania Geological Survey list of “Outstanding Scenic Geological Features of Pennsylvania”. Choose a clear day for this one. The view is fantabulous.

Directions: Some of you will remember that this is also the way to get to the Liston School Road cache. Follow Dunbar-Ohiopyle Road for approximately 5 miles from Dunbar and turn onto Kingan Hill Road by going straight when the main road makes a hairpin turn to the right. Follow this road and your GPS to a Pennsylvania State Gamelands parking area at 39° 56.549', -79° 31.293'. There was a town of sorts at this site in 1815 (ironworks) and again in 1900 (logging camp). Cross a footbridge and continue on a good road to Elk Rocks at 39° 57.080', -79° 32.560'. It will be worth your while to stop here to explore the rocks. You will be due for a rest after climbing up the hill. Look for the names of previous visitors carved into the rocks. It is evidence that there were a lot more people living in this area 100 years ago. Continue from here on a lesser road to the “tree-way” intersection at 39° 57.535', -79° 32.735'. Take the middle fork (ATV trail) to get to the cache. Have Fun!

Note: It may be possible to drive the road from the parking area to Elk Rock in any vehicle with sufficient ground clearance to get across the creek since the locals are pretty good about breaking open the gate and ripping down the “No Motorized Vehicles” signs. Be advised, however, that this is quite obviously illegal and you are on your own if you get caught.

Note: This cache is located on Pennsylvania State Gamelands. During the peak deer season (November 15 - December 15, except Sundays), you must "wear a minimum of 250 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a 360° arc".

Note: This is a good place for Cache-In, Trash-Out! This area can be cleaned up if just a few geocachers will bring out some trash with them.

This cache is back in business! After reviewing the forensic evidence found at the scene, we determined that the "local" was actually a bear. It appears that it fairly succeeded in making a meal out of the cache. Thus I have learned that I should hide ammo cans 100% of the time rather than the occasional rubbermaid. Cache on! Johnny.

Well... That sucks. But then I have been wanting to change out the container for this one anyhow. I look forward to this death march. I can sure use the exercise. I'll have this back online ASAP.

We found the Elk Rock cache today, unfortunately some locals had found it and decided to use it for target practice. We found it hanging from a tree with all of it's contents missing and strewn about the area (along with their beer cans!). The only item left inside was the geocaching note. We replaced what was left of it in it's original hiding spot (which was great) but it will need serviced before being found again. The hike is actually still worth it, the view from the cache site is quite beautiful. We've contacted Quest Master to notify him about the cache.

7 of 9 on my 2nd annual Quest Master Cache Marathon. What a hike! At least I brought my bike for this cache. From the parking area, it's 1.5+ miles to the cache. The 1st mile up to Elk Rock wasn't easy and I spent more time pushing than riding my bike. At least the last 0.5 miles I could ride. I paced around ground zero for a little bit, thinking over & over to myself, "Hmm, Non-traditional hiding spot". Finally, the GPSr said I was within 30 feet, so I took 10 paces, then stopped, and said, "I bet it's here". Bingo! It was! Slightly scared by the "guardian", but an extra poke of a stick proved him harmless. After enjoying the view, I biked up to Elk Rocks, took a quick tour, and then coasted all the way back to my car! TFTC!

The seventh cache on our western PA caching trip. From reading the write-up and loading the waypoints into NG TOPO! we knew we were in for a hike to claim this one. As stated by Quest Master, the gate was busted open and I could have driven almost the whole way to the cache. But, being fine Americans and hard core hikers, a hike it was to be. Up and up and then the amazing rock formation that seemed so out of place compared to the other rock types in the area. I’m not a geologist, but I found this fascinating. People were visiting the rocks and carving their names over 120 years ago – incredible! After exploring the rocks and taking some pictures we headed on to claim our smiley face. A word of warning – we may have sucked in all the available oxygen in the area of the rocks as we recuperated from the climb. The next people up may want to proceed with caution! We noted as we left the rocks that the trail was heading DOWN to the final location. That meant UP to the start of our hike to get back to the cachemobile. Our legs thought this was a bad idea. The view was a great one and we snapped some pictures before heading back up and then down to the vehicle. Thanks for a great hike and cache. We took nothing, left nothing and signed the log.

Found this cache with some great stories to tell!! This cache is challenging, we lost 2 of our hunting party early on and 2 of the party when we had almost reached the site. Our youngest daughter of 8 years outlasted 3 adults. But, this made for a memorable and enjoyable day by all, even those who heard about it later!! The huge rocks are incredible and the view at the cache site is breath-taking. Retrieved a letter P tracking bug and a frog. Left a flashing ball. This was our 4th hunt of the day, not a hunt to do after hunting others! Thanks for a great hunt!!

Found this one around 11:00 AM while caching with JimBat. We had just been hiking on the other side of this river earlier this morning, dropped off my GJTB at the Casparis cache at 7:45 AM.
We decided to take our mountain bikes to this one after parking at the State Gameland Gate at the given parking coordinates. We were beginning to wonder whether the bikes were a good idea or not, as we two slightly out-of-shape cachers pushed them most of the way up, up, UP the hill. Hey, all down hill on the way back!

I know we spent well over an hour climbing around the rocks before we even headed for the cache. This is one of my new favorite places to be in Fayette Cong. Very cool rocks! I could've spent the day looking around here, but I had to go to work that afternoon

We finally forced ourselves to leave the rock playground and went looking for the cache. Pretty nice view from near the cache, but it's a little grown up this time of year. The hide was a clever one, but we found it without a problem. I took nothing and left a purple ruler/comb combo, an Army lanyard and a red and black frog. Also left a pencil because there was nothing to write with in there!
We signed the log and rehid the cache just as we found it.

Now, it's all DOWN hill from here! I think I need new brake pads on my bike!

1st of 6 Quest Master cache adventures in the Fayette-Cong for me today, while the rest of the Nellsnake team was out of town for the weekend. I used Willow’s M.O. to approach this cache, which enabled me to keep my feet dry at least for the moment, although there were several mini water hazards along the trail. I parked at 8:30 a.m. on a gravel portion of Cow Rock Rd in an open area used by the locals for dumping. This was about 3/4 of a mile farther than the state game lands boundary, which made for a very challenging 5.5 mile round trip to and from the cache. I unloaded my bike and started up the often steep and very rocky ATV trail toward the cache. When I got to the cache vicinity, I ditched the bike and the GPSr started dancing around and leading me every which way. After 10-15 min. of looking around, I took a break to look out over the Yough valley and watch a freight train powering through it. After decrypting the hint, I was able to find the cache fairly quickly. I thought I took a TB, but I must have left it in the cache. I left the Foghorn TB. Thanks for a very enjoyable and vigorous cache to start the day, QM! My adventures continued at Liston School Road.
