My nephews suggested this spot for a geocache. They call it the Cabin Place.

The Cabin Place is public property in Forbes State Forest. It’s a great place to enjoy solitude and a picnic lunch. In the summer months there are just a few hikers and mountain bikers enjoying the trails in this remote area. The Cabin Place is busier in the winter whenever there is enough snow for cross country skiing. It is a place for skiers to stop for a break and get warm.

Directions: The cache is on the north side of Route 31 between Donegal and Somerset in the vicinity of Hidden Valley Ski Resort. It can be accessed by hiking, biking, or skiing in on any one of several trails from Route 31, Tunnel Road, or Shafer Run Road. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (yellow blazes) is a good route for hikers. Skiers and mountain bikers will prefer the North Woods Ski Touring Area trails (red blazes). Trail maps are sometimes available at an official parking area located along Tunnel Road at 40° 4.350, -79° 15.340. Mountain bike and cross-country ski rentals are available at the Hidden Valley Ski Barn on Route 31 at 40° 3.965, -79° 14.775.

This cache is in Forbes State Forest. Permit Expires: 11/03/11

I was looking around for a good hike this morning, and when I saw the challenge on this cache, "just in time for nobody to find it ever again", I had to go after it. After all, it is only a 90 mile drive, and the price of gas has come down, so off I went!!! This is a fun hike to a great location. I loved the cabin. Thanks.

I'm pleased to report that this cache is back up and running! The permit has been renewed, and the cache has been relocated and restocked just in time for nobody to find it ever again. Cache on! Johnny.

I have been informed that the permit for this cache has expired. I will see about renewing the permit but right now it appears that the Bureau of Forestry is going to be strict about enforcing the 3-year time limit. Do not hunt this cache. It will be pulled ASAP.

Second find of the day. Found it around 1:45PM. Took the LHHT down and back. Easy going down, kinda tired me out coming back up. Nice hike though, probably only about a mile round trip on that trail. Went inside the cabin first to check it out. Nice little place! I bet it's a warm, welcome sight to the cross country skiers on a cold winter day! But, being a warm, summer day, I kept an eye out for snakes! I hate snakes! Signed the logbook in the cabin and went back outside to find the cache. Used a stick to retrieve it. Don't trust those snakes. I took nothing and left a Hootie and the Blowfish rain poncho and a small bouncy ball with stars in it. This cache is stuffed full!
I signed the cache log and managed to get everything back in the box. I rehid the cache and headed back to the truck. Thanks for showing me this place, Quest Master!
I enjoyed it, and plan on returning with my wife (MaMaMoo) and daughter (Moogirl) to show it to them. Probably in the winter so we can enjoy the woodstove and not have to worry about snakes!

We were on the long drive back from N.J. to Pittsburgh this afternoon after the long (and fattening) Thanksgiving weekend, so we decided to break up the monotony and burn some calories by detouring from the Pike at Somerset to go for this cache. We didn't even mind having to pay an extra $2.00 for the tolls, since we were still getting quite a bargain. We parked just up the road from the Tunnel Road parking area at about 2:50 p.m. since the gate there was locked. We took a bit of time before getting our bearings but then were able to find our way to the red-blazed trails and had a brisk and cold hike toward the warming hut. It was 34°F with a fresh dusting of snow. Alex neglected to change into his caching shoes and instead wore some lightweight sneakers, which got soaked during the course of the hike, and his feet became quite cold, much to his chagrin. Like a previous finder, we also chose poorly at one of the intersections and ended up on the high road getting to within 0.12 miles of the cache, but at the wrong altitude. Farther along, we were able to find a spur trail that went down the hill at a fairly steep angle, but we made it through unscathed. We arrived at the cabin shortly thereafter and found the cache fairly quickly. We took a trail map and signed the cabin logbook along aith the cache logbook at about 3:45 p.m. Alex was wishing that there was a fire in the stove to warm his feet, but unfortunately there weren't many others out and about on the trails today. After a quick photo of the boys in front of the cabin, we made our way back toward the car using a different route that we picked out on the trail map. This was a very beautiful area and nice hike. We shall have to return for some cross-country skiing when there is some significant snow on the ground. Thanks for bringing us here, QM!

My goal for the weekend was to hike in to the Route 31 Shelters Friday night and leave early the next morning to (hopefully) cover the 25 miles to the Ohiopyle Shelters by the end of the next day. For Sunday, I would cover the last 6 miles of the trail to get into Ohiopyle where Kyrie would pick me up to take me back to my car at Rt. 31. Overly ambitious? Probably. But it was worth a try.

After getting into the shelter and getting settled I decided to go for Cabin Place before it got dark. The threat was for scattered thundershowers all weekend but the rain that started was light enough to barely make it down through the trees.

I found the cache without any difficulty just at sunset, 8:11. I left a P-38 can opener and took a Jimmy Neutron toy that had become disgustingly sticky by sharing a ziplock with several pieces of candy.

It was dark by the time I got back to the shelter but there was still enough light that I could navigate the trail without resorting to my headlamp. I tried to go to sleep early (not that there's much else to do) but didn't sleep well with the quarry just south of the shelters operating far into the night. In any case, it would be up early to head for the Firetower Cache and points South.
