"Bluestone" or "Loyalhanna Limestone" is the rock quarried from numerous locations in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania. The suggested route to the cache is a somewhat overgrown trail which follows an old road through the Longbridge Quarry (1883) which produced about 100,000 tons of stone per year including many of the "Belgian Blocks" used to pave the streets of Pittsburgh. There is a good view of an active quarry operation from the cache. The entrance to a quarry mine with passage totaling more than 30 miles can be seen from this vantage point. This quarry was known as the McCance Quarry in its early days.

Directions: Route 30 has one-ways through the gorge and in the vicinity of the parking area for the cache at 40° 16.122', -79° 17.795'. Take care to follow these directions or you may have to drive 3 miles through the gorge and 3 miles back to get to the right place. Eastbound (from Pittsburgh) cache seekers should go approximately 3 miles from the junction of Routes 30 and 217 and turn right on Fourmile Run Road (SR 2043) toward Darlington. The parking area is on the left side of the road about 50 yards from Route 30. Westbound (from Ligonier) cache seekers should turn left (south) on Darlington Road about 1/2 mile west of the entrance to Idlewild Park. Go about 3/10 of a mile and turn right on Fourmile Run Road after crossing the bridge over Loyalhanna Creek. It will be about .8 miles on Fourmile Run Road to the parking area on the right. From the parking area, walk across the road and toward Route 30. Look for a path which begins from the SW side of Fourmile Run Road about 50 feet from Route 30. Follow this path up to the floor of the quarry. The first stage is a micro hidden in one of a zillion holes drilled into the face of the quarry by Kennametal to test their tooling. The second stage is a regular cache hidden at the far end of the quarry. From this point, find a safe route to the top of the quarry and proceed to the final cache. There is little or no trail. Good Luck!

Warning: No dangerous rock climbing is required to get to any part of this cache! Please be careful. Somebody died here in 1985 when they fell from the edge of the quarry.

A ValentineDay hike with joedo proved to be exciting and rewarding. Spectacular view well worth the effort to get there. Must admit I was nearly spent getting there. Snow started falling more heavily on way back down making it a bit more challenging. Walking along the ridge was awesome. Saw rope for rapelling. Walked above Trickle Falls...make sure you stop there at bottom to look for another cache. TFTC dlf612

What a wonderful cache!!
Loved the view and really enjoyed our walk on Valentines Day with DLF 612. We all agree we would rate the terrain going to the last cache a little higher. May want to check out container at second site. It was cracked and wet on the inside. We can't say enough about the views and experience hiking in a gorge we have passed so many times and have never taken the time to explore until today. TFTC.

I am proud to report that I finally found this cache. We tried it almost a year ago, but came up empty. I returned today and headed straight up to the final. The GPSR took me to the same exact spot as before, and I looked around a little. Again nothing, so I expanded my search area and bingo! I'm glad to get this one done, and I loved it. I took the long way back out enjoying this nice day off to start fall. Thanks for the fun!

A very nice cache. The first two stages were in mint condition and the third was well stocked and dry. The ammo can was a bit rusty. We did the first two stages a couple weeks ago when we did Trickle Falls and ran out of time to do the final. There really isn't a trail/path to the final. When we got near the rocks, my wife tripped and the battery compartment to the GPS opened, releasing all four batteries. I managed to dig around and find three. The clue helped. We found a snake on the way out. We saved the TB there. Thank you QM.

I decided to make a maintenance run this cache today on account of the recent DNF. I replaced the coordinates slips in the first two stages and checked the coordinates for the second stage and final. The coordinates seemed to be off by about 50 feet for the second stage according to my new GPS but the final turned out to be within tolerance and I'm happy to report that it's still there alive and well after being in service for more than 6 years! It's chock full of good stuff too after all this time! The only bummer is that I carried a spare cache the whole way through this hunt and back to the car for nothing. I should probably return someday to put revised coordinates in the first two stages but it won't be a priority because I think they're plenty good enough to get this hunt done. It's tough, but fair, and I had a blast reliving my mischief. Cache on!

Three of the 4MRnutz set out for this navicache this afternoon on a great fall day. We found the parking spot and the trailhead and off we went to stage one. As we got close, I saw where we needed to search, and after a bit of searching, we found it. Explained to our youngest what those holes were used for and off to stage 2. Found stage 2 pretty quickly, but it is getting a bit damp. There was some kind of business card on laying next to the slip with the final coords on it, and because of the dampness, they were stuck together. I was panicking because I thought we came all this way, and the final coords were not readable! But, I just rubbed off the card, and there they were! I punched in the final coords, and off we were again. We located ground zero, thinking the hardest part was over. Boy, was I wrong! There are a ton of possible hiding spots, and the whole area is grown up. There are tall ferns growing all over the place. Throw in the fallen leaves and the fact that it hasn't been found in awhile, and it ended up being a job to big for us. We looked for about an hour, and came up empty. The gps kept pointing to the same spot, but we looked and looked but nothing. There is a great view from the area, so at least we found that! We decided to head out cross-country, and the girls impressed me with the way they handled the hillside. So thanks for showing us this place. We will have to try again sometime.

Just a nice easy walk after work. Quick park and grab.
Hahaha, Just kidding. This was another Epic Questmaster Cache. The hike was a killer as we just couldn't seem to find anything resembling a trail from about halfway to the final cache. But it was completely worth it when we got to the top. Caching with Luvbus for this one made the walk a bit more bearable. Thanks go out to Questmaster for getting me outside and giving me some exercise. Saw a big millipede, a mole, and a few spring peeper frogs. There was also evidence of some boyscout activity about halfway from the first to the second stage. They really have a big camping area underway there. Thanks for the cache Questmaster. I enjoyed this one.

Holy Cache. This is one cache that was well worth the hike. and find with Mooman56 today and I can safely say that we both really enjoyed this one. Started out at the suggested parking coords and hiked in. Found stage1 in an interesting spot after a couple minutes of searching. off to stage2 but not before taking in the sights and snapping a few pics. Stage2 took a little while longer. GPS was sending us in circles but nonetheless we found it. Punched in the coords and off we go or is this the right way. Nope figured out that we needed to go up, up, up. So thats what we did. Finally...reached gz and the search was on and off then on then off. GPS was bouncing around up there. Finally I went one way and Mooman went another and there it was. Mooman spotted it first then I went over and grabbed the cache. Signed the log then rehid as we found it.

We spotted a baby bobcat running into its home. Pretty cool but who did it run too? I don't want to find out.

#1 of 2 this afternoon. When you do a QuestMaster cache, there is no cache-n-dash, but usually a great adventure that you need to budget a big chunk of time to do. Anyways, after weeks of therapy, I decided to come back and face my fears (see previous DNF entry on April 15, 2006) and wrap up QM's Bluestone cache. At least with the snow and cold, there shouldn't be any extra-curricular activities going on in the woods. I had accidentally deleted the coordinates for the final stage from my GPS (my thumbs got a little spastic). Why can't they put undo buttons on your GPS?!?! So, I started over at stage #1 to grab the coordinates just in case I couldn't remember where stage #2 was from my last attempt. Due to the excessive moisture, stage #1 was almost incased in a icicle. A few poundings with my trekking pole broke it free. Then onto stage #2 which I found easily. With the 2" of snow on the ground, I carefully choose a safe route to the final stage. Took a little searching, but I finally found it. Then I thought, "Now that I'm up here, how do I get down?". Figuring that the deer didn't jump off cliffs, I followed a deer path back toward stage #1 and safely descended (i.e. slid) down a small notch. Thanks for a very cool cache, Johnny!

My wife and I were out on this lovely spring day and decided to take on one of Quest Master's challenging (yet rewarding) geocaches. We found the 1st stage without too much problem and then the 2nd stage was a bit tougher. My GPSr seemed a bit jumpy and it was difficult to get a good lock on the waypoints while in the gorge. I misread the hint for the last stage and we stayed at the bottom of the quarry, figuring that we would just need to climb halfway up. After some searching we finally gave up. In retrospect and after viewing previous logs it appears that we should have been at the top looking down. The trip was doublely disappointing as we past 2 people having sex at the power line on the way in. I come to the woods to see God's creation like the trees, deer, squirrels, and such. Not your rear-end. So, people, if you get the urge, please stay indoors, and spare the rest of us. Thank You! If I run into any more of these incidents, I'm giving up geocaching.

My brother-in-law and his family were in town for the weekend for Nellsnake #1's gala 40th birthday celebration and the wives wanted us and the kids to get out of the house so they could set up for the party. So, the dads and three kids headed out on yet another gorgeous clear day in April to the east to go after this great cache. We arrived at the parking location at about 1 p.m. and had a snack before heading up the trail. We arrived at the location of the first micro before long and were confronted with a multitude of potential hiding spots for a film canister. We quickly resorted to the hint, which turned out to be very helpful. Very interesting man-made formations in the rock surface. We then continued along the trail, and several members of the team started complaining about getting hot and thirsty. Almost as if on cue, a refreshing waterfall appeared. The kids and Rick enjoyed cooling off by dunking their heads under the stream of cold water (see photos). We then proceeded on to the second stage cache, which we were able to uncover after a 10 minute or so search of the area. We then plugged in the coordinates to the final stage, and I had had a strong feeling beforehand which way we were going to need to go. We had a very strenuous hike up to the area of the final stage, stopping periodically to rest, enjoy beautiful views, and play on the neat boulders along the way. The footing became a bit treacherous in the area of the final cache, and a couple members of the crew fell through on more than one occasion. We looked in some deep crevices and caves in the area, but were unable to come up with the cache. I explored very thoroughly with my flashlight an interesting cave that went back in about 20 feet or so and was fairly claustrophobic at times. This seemed like a perfect hang-out spot. We eventually decided to decrypt the clue, which helped focus our search substantially. Nellsnake #1 scored the find first after a bit more searching in the area, but waited until the kids each found it as well before retrieving it. We brought the container up to a level area and enjoyed the view across to the mine and quarry (see photos). We took a globe hacky-sack and a magnifying glass and left some geocaching temporary tattoos, lip balm, and a Do Yinz Speak Pittsburghese? sticker. We signed in the logbook at about 2:45 p.m. Thanks for yet another great cache, hike, and adventure, QM!

Another Powerful vista and a power hike. Proceed with caution and safety first. Thought we were looking for an Ice Cream Tub. Good thing we got here before Quest could harm the Monkey. We plan to place this one at Niagara. Exchanged trinkets and posted to the log book. Good & Safe Caching to all to follow.
