Falls City was the name for Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania prior to its incorporation as a borough in 1881. It just isn’t right that there has not yet been a geocache in the beautiful park which surrounds Falls City. Ohiopyle State Park is well known for its whitewater rafting, the bike trail, and numerous other opportunities for outdoor recreation. It is appropriate that this first cache in Ohiopyle State Park was placed in the area which was the genesis of the park but I ultimately had to move it because geocaches aren't allowed in natural areas. Park in the lot adjacent the Ferncliff Reserve, a registered National Natural Landmark, which is about 100 acres in a sort of peninsula enclosed by “the loop” of the Youghiogheny River. This area was saved from development in 1951 when Edgar J. Kaufmann purchased it for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The 19,000 acre park of today grew out of this seed.

The reserve has not always been 100% natural. There was a rather large resort on the peninsula at the turn of the century. The Ferncliff Hotel was the premier accommodation in the days when excursion trains ran from Pittsburgh and Cumberland to Ohiopyle for one dollar. The Ferncliff had 800 electric lights, an indoor bowling alley, and a dining room large enough to serve 150 guests. There were arched walkways, fountains, a bandstand, tennis courts, a baseball field, and a therapeutic hot springs on the hotel grounds. The remainder of the area was proposed as a subdivision of Falls City. It is interesting to consider that there might never have been a park if this development had taken place.

Had a gorgeous day for a great gorge hike! Been wanting to get this one and finally got my chance. It is a nice little up hill walk with what I'm sure would be a great view in the fall. Very interesting history lesson, and for some more history, if you are interested, read this (long, but very informative) account of the area from the 1600's on: http://www.ohiopyle.info/Ohiopyle_History.html
Thanks as always, QM, you got all the good ones

This was on the way back from Petulance Point to the campground, so I went and found it again (I logged it a couple years ago when it was still listed on gc.com). It was just like I remember it. I also searched though the log books for my original log, but couldn't find it. Weird. Anyway, signed in again. TFTC.

We enjoyed finding this cache, it was a great day to walk the bike trail. The trip up was not "too" bad. We found the cache quite easily, it was not covered completely, we tried to hide it a little better before we left. The cache was in good condition and we enjoyed reading the many logs that have accumulated over the years. We took a pocket screwdriver and left a Hallmark Keepsake ornament (Titania) and some travel shampoo & conditioner for the campers.

4:54PM -- #8 of 9 in the QuestMaster Cache Marathon today. After a yummy meal at the Firefly Grill and some Hershey's ice cream, I was refreshed enough to continue caching. I wanted to find this cache, not only because its stay at Ohiopyle State Park will soon expire, but because a good friend (PittCaleb) of mine introduce me to geocaching a few years back while we were spending a weekend at Ohiopyle. We attempted the cache, but weather was throwing off his GPS by 90' so we never found it. However, I was bit by the geocaching bug and hooked ever since. TFTC!

Brought scouts from Ellicot City, MD for rafting. I decided to geocache. This was a good one. The adventure was trying to get off the ridge without falling. Almost made it, too. Anyway, took nothing, left a Symbology geocoin. Thanks!

Since this has been moved from one site to another, I'll happily follow it along. Thanks for keeping it alive.

Great walk on a nice day. This one was a relatively short hike from the car. The last few yards were uphill but it wasn't a bad hike. Enjoyed this one very much. Thanks for the cache!

Updating my account.
This was our final and easiest cache of four for today on our field trip to the 'Cong from here in Central PA. Great location, easy find. This log is a little abbreviated, I wanted to get the travel bug logged in to prevent confusion for the next finder. Thanks for the cache, QM, the other logs will be much more descriptive! TNLNSL.

Third and final find of the day. Found this one at 4:00 PM.
Rode my bike up the trail from South Connellsville.
Found cache to be safe and well hidden.
Very cool hiding spot!
GPSr lead me right to it!

Lucky me found a pack of 4 "AAA" batteries to put in my nice, new flashlight that I found in the Carmel Trestle Vista cache this morning! Yeah!!!

Both logbooks were filled, so I left a new one.
I hope that's OK, Quest Master.

I signed the new log and rehid the cache well.

I enjoyed checking out this area and plan on bringing my family back up here to hike the nearby trails.

Now, I just have to make the 17 mile bike ride back home...

3:19 PM. #3 of the day. Well, the girls all got tired, so just boys continued to this cache (Kevin, Kevin, Kevin and Brandon. Personally, I was in search of the elusive YJTB. I have not been to Ohiopyle since being a resident in the mid 90's. I forgot how beautiful the area is. Awesome walk, the last few hundred feet are quite a steep climb. KJ found the cache easily. It was not hid well, and it was wrapped in a black trash bag???!?! KJ took 3 marbles, left pink hair tie and an army man. Brandon took a yo-yo and left an army guy. My good friend Kevin took it upon himself to re-hide this, and re-hide it well he did. We all enjoyed the "slide" back down... Oh yeah, no YJTB, it was grabbed yesterday, but not logged online yet. So, I grabbed the Reach TB.

Another great Questmaster cache. This one a bit easier than most. No long, long hill climbs or streams to ford. Just a nice walk along the bike trail and then onto the cache.

Thanks much QM for this one to start the day. MrsPossum48 is really glad we did this one today because she got to realize a longtime dream, going to see Cucumber Falls.

Walk was nice and the cache an easy find. Took Deer Valley lanyard and left a yellow yo-yo. Also left the #8 keychain from the Scouts on Braddock's Trail cache. SL

#2 of 4 today in the Ohiopyle area for the whole Nellsnake team on this warm and humid holiday weekend. We had thought about camping in the Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle this evening, but when I called to make a reservation early this morning, all of the campsites were of course booked for this weekend. We decided to stop by anyway to check out the area, and we parked in a quasi-public area near the front gate. We made our way over to the Great Gorge Trail nearby and followed it down the gorge to the cache area, which was not too bad a hike. The return trip was quite a bit more exhausting, especially for the younger members of the team. We found the cache quickly and were surprised to note that we were the 3rd group of visitors to the cache already today. We signed the logbook at 3 p.m. We were even more surprised to find that our Speedy Racer TB that is in the TRIGO TB race from San Francisco back to Pittsburgh had been logged into the cache on the 30th (although not logged in online until later this afternoon). But, we weren't able to pick it up because ironically another group of cachers had taken the TB out at 12:30 p.m. to move it along toward Pittsburgh. So we just missed picking up our own TB by a mere 2 1/2 hours! We took a quarter and left a portable electric fan. We then drove over to the Ohiopyle Falls area to check it out for the first time. Thanks for another fun cache, Quest Master!

We came to Ohiopyle to meet friends that had been biking the trails. After lunch we introduced the five of them to Geocaching. Maybe fifty percent seemed interested enough to take up the sport? We left a mini-electronic car game and took an action figure. We talked with the Questmaster who gave us coords for his nearby Elk Rock Cache. Then we went up the hill to scope out the BASH camp site. GOOD & SAFE Caching to all who follow

The following account is an excerpt from my four-day bike riding and geocaching expedition from McKeesport, PA to Washington, DC along the Youghiogheny River and Allegheny Highlands Trails and the C&O Canal Towpath. To read the entire account, visit the author’s web log at http://www.tasigh.org/gps/gap2003.html

After logging the waterfall locationless cache GC5172 this was actually my first real geocache along the Youghiogheny River Trail since I started my trip 6 hours earlier. As I said in previous logs, there are others along the lower part of the trail but I had gotten those on earlier trips.

I ride the trail often but seldom get above Connellsville. I should change that because the area around Ohiopyle is very nice. The water is faster and you can always hear it splashing through the rapids. I also think that there are fewer bugs here than in the lower, calmer reaches.

This cache find was relatively quick and easy. I took an Orca and left a glow stick and P-38 military can opener.

I stopped at the Visitor Center at Ohiopyle, logged a benchmark (JW0588) on a bridge over the Youghiogheny, had some lunch and then proceeded on my way.

(backlogging some old finds)

Came here with the family, but only a few of us made it to the cache. We couldn't find an easy approach, so some of the group sat below and waited. Maybe we should have had a topo. Found it easily once we got up there. Took a sheet of stickers, left a CD of teen music. The bridge was a blast! I've been to this area several times but haven't been on any of the hiking trails. I'd love to spend more time here.
