This cache would be in the basement of the A. C. Stikel & Company store in the town of Hampton in Fayette County, Pennsylvania if it still existed. Hampton, which was also called Indian Creek, is a ghost town. Nobody lives or has lived here for quite some time and there is very little evidence left that would indicate that there ever was a town here. The town probably got its name from the Hampton Forge ironworks (1810-1830) which was located in the valley close to the mouth of Indian Creek. In the days of the Indian Creek Valley Railroad (1908-1926), it was a prosperous town with a population of about 200 people. It was the main shipping point for lumber mills and coal mines operating in the Indian Creek Valley. There were at least 25 homes, a sawmill, a school, a post office, a store, a hotel, and a telegraph office in the town. One can only wonder whatever became of it all.

Directions: Getting to “Hampton” or “Indian Creek” and the cache is not easy but it promises to be fun. It's about 8 miles to the cache and back on the grade of what used to be the Indian Creek Valley Railroad. It's a great ride on a mountain bike! Motorized vehicles are not allowed on this trail but don't be surprised if you see a few. The grade is a bit steeper than other rail-trails and the surface is a bit rough in spots but you don’t have to be an athlete to ride it. Mountain Bikes can be rented in nearby Ohiopyle or Connellsville. To get to the trailhead, drive 2 miles south from Normalville on Route 381 and turn right (west) on Camp Christian Road. Go .6 miles and turn right into a small parking area at 39° 58.328', -79° 27.548'. Park here and continue by bicycle on the road beyond the gated bridge. There is a three-way fork in this road about .2 miles from the gate. Take the center fork for the ICV Trail which will take you to the cache.

We were out caching today with friends bpalya & weezer, finishing up the Indian Creek series and decided since we were in the area we would search out the Hampton cache as well. We hiked down the ICV trail from the parking area. It was a nice 60 degree Spring day and the water in the creek was up from the recent rains which made for a very scenic hike. After finding Indian Creek #4 we headed for Hampton. bpalya made the find and we signed the log. The cache was in fine shape. It's a very interesting area to explore. I imagine it would have been a very beautiful place to live. After finding the cache, bpalya and weezer headed back and Mike and I went on to finish up #5 of the Indian Creek series. All in all it was an exceptional day to be out hiking with friends. Thanks Questmaster for bringing us to this historic location.

9 of 9 on my 2nd annual Quest Master Cache Marathon. What a bike ride and a bushwack! It's now about 6:30PM and I thought I would squeeze in one more cache in my marathon. Parking at the Camp Christian parking area, I hopped on my bike and headed down. A bit steeper than most rail-to-trails and a bit rough at spots. I can't believe the trail is unmarked! There's no signs indicating it's the ICV Trail. I tried to grab a few other caches along the way, but my GPSr kept losing satellite reception. I felt I already wasted too much time and I sailed down to Hampton, passing a snapping turtle along the way on the trail. I had to bushwack the last 100 feet in, and all the while wishing that I didn't do this cache while the summer foliage is at its maximum growth. Neat hiding spot. I didn't stay long because I was losing daylight. About 1/4 the way up, I saw a small round black animal running 100 feet ahead of me on the trail before it veered uphill on the right and out of sight. THAT'S A BEAR!!! It could be a cub and a mad mama bear could be about, I thought, so I cranked out the last 3/4's of the trail as fast as I could on my bike. TFTC! but a bit scary that evening.

There are signs posted at the entrance to the Hawkins Hollow route which state that the township has officially vacated the right-of-way that was an alternate route to the cache. The cache description has been updated accordingly to remove any mention of this fun jeeping adventure that is no more.

We were out doing the Indian Creek valley series and made this one our goal of the day. It proved to be a worthwhile goal.

The historical caches are our favorites and the other ones we found and also didn't find along the way were bonuses. We've walked farther for just one cache because this part of Team Metamorphosis is kinda picky about what we go searching.

Thanks for a great experience!

A nice long hike in an area I have grown up exploring!! My families home place was right up on the hill. We took a friend that has never been caching, or been to the old town, and I think he liked both. He works with a lady who has family that lived in that town, and she asked him if he had ever been there. He asked me to take him to see it and I've been wanting to show him caching, so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone. He got some nice pictures of the foundations and side walks on the other side of the creek for her. Also some nice pics of the bridges. It's hard to believe that so many people lived here for such a long time, and now there is so little trace that there was ever anything here. Another great Quest Master cache! Took nothing. Cache is getting wet inside. I think the seal on the can is not working right. Thanks!!

Found this one at 6:30PM. This makes find #40 for me. I don't know why I waited so long to do this one, it's only 4.4 miles from my house ATCF! But, I decided to drive 14 miles to put myself about 4 miles on the other side of the cache and then make an approx. 8 mile round trip bike ride to get to the cache. We all know that is just the way you do things sometimes while geocaching! I've been wanting to bike down the old Indian Creek Valley Railroad grade for a while, so the cache near the end was a bonus! I started at the yellow gate by the Mill Run dam/reservoir. It's a pretty nice ride down the grade because the ATVs have it worn pretty smooth. There are a few rougher spots near the bottom, but nothing real bad. The sound of the creek helps make the ride even more enjoyable.
After making my way to the river, I looked around for a while before looking for the cache. There were a lot of campers at Camp Carmel across the river, some were cooling off in the river! I also found a benchmark nearby. I then heard a train coming so I headed back across the tracks to begin my search.

I soon found out that this is not a very good time of year to look for this cache! It takes quite a bit of bushwacking through very high weeds! All I could think about were all of the places snakes could be hiding! I hate snakes! Found the cache easily, but I sure took my time and took every step carefully! The cache was well hidden and the contents were safe and dry. I took a little green alien and a keychain with a light, whistle, and compass. I left a big yellow bouncy ball and a stick-on cow head pencil holder. I signed the logbook and rehid the cache well.

I wrote in the log that I made it to the cache without seeing a snake, but I had to get back out of there!
Guess what? I met Mr. Copperhead laying right in my path on the way out! Yuck! I poked him with a stick and he never moved. I poked him again and he just turned his head around and looked at me! I poked again and he tried to bite my stick. Defiant little bugger! I finally poked a little harder and he took off through the weeds. And so did I! I hopped back on my bike and headed back up the trail, stopping a few places along the way to check out the scenery. Saw a few locals swimming in the swimming hole in Indian Creek and also passed a few ATV riders.

This area is even more beautiful than I remembered from my visits from years ago. Thanks for the cache, Quest Master, I really enjoyed this one!

2nd of 2 today on a 34° snowy but pleasant Sunday in Fayette County. I've been wanting to try this one for some time, and today was the perfect day for a muddy yet invigorating bike ride along the I.C.V. trail to and from the cache. I was well bundled up for the journey, and I actually got a bit warm on the return trip going uphill for 4 miles. There was one spot on the trail that required a brief portage of the bike due to an exceptionally large puddle. I made the trip from the parking area to the cache in a quick 20 minutes on my mountain bike, enjoying the view of the heavily flowing rapids of Indian Creek all along the way. I ditched the bike when I got within a few hundred feet of the cache near the railroad. I strategically bushwhacked to avoid crossing one No Trespassing sign put up by the railroad. I also noticed another such sign that had likely been pulled down by the locals. There was not a soul in the area, so I had free reign of the little town. My signal was bouncing around a fair bit near the cache, but I was able to find the cache after a 5-10 minute search around the ruins. I signed in at 12:35 p.m. but didn't make a trade. I then geared up for a vigorous 4-mile uphill return trip, which took 29 minutes. The cool snowflakes hitting my face really felt good, although the mud spraying up into my face when I went through puddles did not. When I got back in the car, I fogged it up almost immediately due to my heat production. Thanks for a great cache, Johnny!

We 4 wheel through this valley often (3 times since 8/30/01). Today, being our Official Geocaching Anniversary we remembered to bring the coordinates for the Hampton Cache. Now our 4 wheelin buds believe us and may just become new adventurers in the sport of Geocaching. Ran into our Dilbert Slammer and made the multi-tool larger, left a yo-yo & water gun too. Good & Safe Caching for all who follow.
