This cache is in a quarry which supplied the raw material for mould and glass-making operations in the nearby town of Dunbar. I do not know the exact dates of operation but I do know that it was most active during the early part of the twentieth century. The quarry employed approximately 30 men to drill, shoot, load, haul, and process thirty or forty boxcar loads of sand per week. Stone from the quarry was crushed into sand at a sandmill (see pic) which was located about 500 yards from the cache site. An electric winch brought a train of a dozen empty ore carts up to the quarry from the mill and gravity brought the loaded carts back down the steep, narrow-gage tramway. The descent of this 60,000 pound roller coaster was a tricky business. Friction brakes on the carts were the only means of keeping it under control. It is really scary to think what might have happened if it had ever gotten away from them!

This is quite the clever cache if I do say so myself. It should not be difficult to find but getting there can be tricky. You can expect to experience some difficulty with GPS reception on the final approach to the cache but not at the actual cache location (hint). The hunt will be much safer and more enjoyable if you bring a flashlight (hint, hint).

Directions: from Dunbar, follow the "arrows" for Irishtown and take Hardy Hill Road for 1.0 miles to Twin Oaks Drive. Go .2 miles on Twin Oaks to a very small parking area on the right at 39° 57.520', -79° 35.969'. The trail to the cache is hidden behind a big pile of dirt on the other side of the road.

Note: This cache is located on Pennsylvania State Gamelands. During the peak deer season (November 15 - December 15, except Sundays), you must "wear a minimum of 250 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a 360° arc".

I have had this on my watch list (or spy list) since I began geocaching. This was not my first assault. I had rummaged through the upper portal without a flashlight and had struck out. So with the sun shining and my LED flashlight in hand I once again set out to find what has become the quintessential old school(read quality)cache. It's a shame the Frog didn't footnote this cache and the lick and stick magnetic guard rail assassins were never required to at least read the cache page and the logs. Oh well, I don't think it would have had any effect... What fun! Creepy caves, strange waterfalls, elements of fear and euphoria and the most unique geocaching experience I have had the pleasure of crawling through the mud for. All is well, I signed log book #3, the ammo can is still cabled to the rock and there were no soggy McNothin's inside. QM thanks for a great experience!

Thanks Johnney for not removing this one and going with a better cache site. I'm hoping to get back into caching some and I'm glad to be able to finish Questmasters' caches.

We had heard so may rave reviews about this cache and we have been wanting to do it for quite a while. We decided today was the day! What an amazing place for a cache! I was a bit leary about the approach, but Mike kept me going forward. A nice cache to find on a hot day, this one will keep you cool. Mike located the cache once we arrived and we signed the log, took a small mesh bag and left a carbineer flashlight. If your trying to decide if this is a cache you want to find, we would say "go for it" you'll be glad you did.

The fifth cache on our western PA caching trip. The cache write-up was intriguing and it went on our to-do list before we left home. Let’s just say it didn’t disappoint. On the way in to the cache I had just pointed our the fresh turkey scratchings on the trail when we busted a flock of about a dozen birds feeding on the trail around the next bend. I think they are now legal game as I type this on Saturday. This is a really amazing location. After arriving at ground zero I thought to myself, “I hope the cache is right here, or we have a lot of backtracking to do”. It was there, we found it and signed the log . Thanks for another great adventure. I won’t add to much more so as to not spoil it for future seekers.

Didn't really plan on doing any caching today (had a lot of stuff to do in the yard ... it was supposed to rain, etc.) but after dinner, it still hadn't starting raining ... and well, since there were a few hours of daylight left I talked my wife into going even though I hated going without my daughter, Moogirl. But she went to see "Beauty and the Beast" with a friend so we went ahead without her this time. After seeing what a neat spot the cache is hidden in, I'll definitely bring her to find this one.
It was a nice walk to the cache area except for the split second ... when out of the corner of my eye ... I saw what I thought was a skinny, little snake in the path. Turns out it was only a bungee cord. Not one of those black rubber ones ... one of those round ones with a pattern on it. You know ... kinda like a snake's pattern. Well, at least out of the corner of your eye ... for a split second, anyhow. After getting past that we finished our trek and found the cache just as it was starting to rain. Didn't mind a bit. It was actually kinda cool.

We took a green piggy keychain and a crystal. Left some polished rocks, lanyard and a rubber bat. Signed the last page of log book so I left a new one and rebagged them in a new baggie because the old one had a hole in it.

Thanks, Quest Master, for doin' what you do! I always enjoy the history lesson as well as the hunt. Never knew this place was here and never would have if it wasn't for this cache.

Find #100 for the Nellsnake team! We wanted to have a special cache hunt for our 100th find, and this one didn't disappoint. We were driving back from N.J. to Pittsburgh during the day, so decided to take a detour to find this legendary QM cache. We were able to find the parking spot with only one wrong turn along the way. The hike through the woods was beautiful on this clear and relatively mild winter late afternoon. Our initial approach to the cache proved to be incorrect, which we realized only after arriving at the precipice with less than 50 feet to the cache--so close and yet so far. This did give us a good chance to scope out the general cache area. With some difficulty, we then made our way around and found the appropriate entry portal. Only Nellsnake Dad and the youngest member of the team dared to proceed further. Luckily we brought along the flashlight in our backpack. Nevertheless, the terrain still proved to be fairly treacherous with lots of icy rocks to negotiate. Once we got to the area, we found the cache fairly quickly in very good shape. We took a colored pencil set and left a Pot-Belly Professional doctor magnet. It was starting to get pretty dark by the time we left the area. Thanks for a very interesting and exciting (i.e., not lame) cache experience, QM!

(backlogging some old finds)

Hands down, the coolest cache location I've seen!

We were visiting my wife's family in the area for Memorial Day weekend, and I had to do at least one Quest Master cache. On the recommendation of The Leprechauns and of Quest Master himself, I opted for this one. I went out on my own around 8am Saturday morning. The drive in was eerie, with no one around. Lep had warned me about getting around Dunbar, but I stumbled on the correct roads with no problem. I didn't realize how small a parking location I was looking for, and I almost got the family Windstar stuck in a sandy drive a little north of the given coords (wrong side of the road, too). I finally found the spot and headed out, thrilled to be hiking in the backwoods of Pennsylvania.

I came to a fork and unknowingly took the correct path. But when I got within 400ft, I thought I was wrong. So I went back to the fork and tried bushwhacking, but that seemed wrong. I then read the clue, went back a few yards further than I had initially gone, and my jaw absolutely dropped to the ground when I found where I knew I had to go.

No problem getting to the final site, but looked for nearly an hour before finally finding the obvious spot. The area is teeming with critters, so watch your step. Lots of frogs, millipedes, and salamanders.

I left a hamster in the cache, straight from Michigan and headed for the Leprechauns' hands. I also left a Dinoprophet pin. Took nothing.

The next day I brought my wife, daughter, and sis-and-bro-in law to see it. We had a great time exploring it and the second site.

Thanks for an incredible adventure, QM. I'm afraid you've spoiled all other geocaches for me.
