Liston School Road is the only drivable route into this beautiful area way off the beaten path. It is quite popular with the locals but you probably won’t find it in any tourist brochures. This mostly unpaved road runs through State Gamelands #51 about 6 miles from Dunbar in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The road has some rough spots but you should be able to make it in an ordinary passenger car if you are careful and take it slow. Do not attempt if there is snow or ice because there is no winter maintenance. Liston School Road dead ends down at Camp Carmel on the Youghiogheny River which is smack dab in the middle of nowhere. It will be a very long walk back to civilization if you end up stranded there. Please use the waypoints listed below to guide you in to the first stage of this cache hunt. Some of these waypoints are for navigational purposes only but others are scenic points of interest that you may want to check out while you are in the neighborhood. Three of them are located close to stages in the cache hunt. The first, second, and third stages contain a clue and coordinates for the next stage. If you are unable to locate one of the caches for some reason, the encrypted coordinates for the second, third, and final stages are included at the end of this page so that your tour will not be ruined. This is a total cheat and you should fess up in your post if you skip one. Please let me know if there are any problems. Your feedback is always appreciated.

Note: This area is currently under the stewardship of the North Summit Hunt Club. You may not rock climb, camp, picnic, hunt, carry firearms, or drive offroad vehicles on the property EVEN IF THERE IS AMPLE EVIDENCE THAT OTHERS HAVE BEEN DOING IT! ATTEMPT THIS CACHE AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU ARE 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. THE LANDOWNER WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DUMB BUTT!

Directions: Follow Dunbar-Ohiopyle Road for approximately 5 miles from Dunbar and turn onto Kingan Hill Road by going straight when the main road makes a hairpin turn to the right. This road will take you directly to Liston School Road (no sign) which begins (I think) at the very busy intersection of Kingan Hill and Greenbriar Roads. Follow your GPS from here to the first stage of the cache hunt. Good Luck!

Waypoints and Bonus Virtual Caches

39° 55.956', -79° 33.274' Turn from Dunbar-Ohiopyle Road to Kingan Hill Road
39° 55.725', -79° 31.855' Junction of Kingan Hill and Greenbriar Roads
39° 55.854', -79° 31.407' Pavement Ends

39° 56.132', -79° 31.291' Site of Liston School. This one-room schoolhouse was still standing when I first visited this area about twenty years ago. The road was unpaved and in very rough shape the whole way in to this point and there were even fewer people living back in this area at this time. I always wondered who would have gone to school in this place. It is evidence that there was a village or town in this area once upon a time.

39° 56.544', -79° 31.270' Laurel Furnace. This impressive ruin of an old stone blast furnace was known as the New Laurel Furnace (1812-1838). The Old Laurel Furnace (1797-1812) was about one mile up the creek from this location. These furnaces produced some of the iron for the Hampton Forge Ironworks which was about one mile down the valley and across the river from here. There was also a major logging operation in this area from 1901 to 1906. The sawmill and lumber camp were at this site and a narrow gage railway ran from here down to and across the Youghiogheny River to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

39° 56.981', -79° 30.591' Strip Mine. Park here. Stage #1 of the cache hunt is nearby.

39° 57.313', -79° 30.552' The Moon (aka Mount Elijah). There is a panoramic 360° view from this hilltop. Look for the windmills. There should be ten of them. Stage #2 of the cache hunt is nearby.

39° 57.175', -79° 30.730' Krahlick Rocks (aka Craylick Rocks, Gap Rocks). This is the highest natural rock outcrop that I know of in southwestern PA. Enjoy the view! It used to be very popular with climbers. Watch your step! Stage #3 of the cache hunt is nearby.

39° 57.045', -79° 30.822' The Swimming Hole. This waterfall and swimming hole were featured on the KDKA television program “Evening Magazine”. It has been called the best secret swimming hole in the Pittsburgh Area. The water is about 7 to 8 feet deep. Expect that it will be COLD. It is possible to slide down the waterfall or jump from a high ledge. The final stage of the cache hunt is nearby.

This was a beautiful day to go caching. We went with Perky2000 (my sister) and brother -in-law. What a beautiful area!!! We found stage one, stage two and did not venture to stage 3 due to crccman calling our attention to a small copperhead lying along the side of the road. Thank goodness he looked down before steping out of the car. We then headed to the final cache, (thanks for the clues. Headed to the water hole first. Oh my such a beautiful swimming area. We watched several guys jump into the water. Oh the young and brave!!!! I never would have done that! We then headed for the cache. I took a bear and left US State Flash cards. Loved the cache. If youever get a chance, it would be nice of you to hide one in WV , we enjoyed this one so much.

We decided this would be a good cache to take jmarino and crccman on today. They came up from WV just to go caching with us. We have been wanting to do a few of these caches and we are glad that we picked today to do this one. It was a beautiful clear day. We had an idea of where to begin with stage one and we found it quite easily. Got the coordinates and it was off to stage two. We drove to within .3 miles and walked the rest of the way. What a view, with the clear sky, the windmills were very easy to see. We got the coordinates and headed off to stage three. We started to get out of the car near a pull off to begin searching for stage three when crccman yelled I'm not getting out of the car there's a copperhead!! And he was right, it was just outside his door of the car. Mike took photos (I'll upload photo's later) and we decided to skip stage three and work on the clue instead. We got the coordinates to the final stage and headed off to find it. We found the path to the blue hole and had to go first to take a look at the swimming hole. It is so beautiful!! It was a perfect day for swimming. We weren't there long when several boys came down for a swim. We enjoyed watching them
jump from the cliff and took more photos. This is truly a hidden gem in Fayette County. After having a snack we headed out to the cache. We found it in great shape and full of goodies. I took a Simba keychain and a wooden nickel and we left a sewing kit. Afterwards we decided to head to Trilogy Falls (we were FTF on it) but we wanted jmarino and crccman to find it. On the way back out the parking spot to the blue hole was full of cars, it is quite the popular spot with the locals and rightly so. I must say, I think this spot is one of the most beautiful we've been to. Thanks Questmaster for leading us to this wonderful spot.

4 of 9 on my 2nd annual Quest Master Cache Marathon.
When I initially planned to do this cache, I thought it would be tough, but it turned out to be fairly easy. The 1st stage was easy to find and I drove up to the "Moon" and easily found stage 2. Nice view, but a bit hazy to see the windmills. Afterward, I re-read the cache page and realized that I probably wasn't suppose to drive to stage 2, based on the guidelines of the North Summit Hunt Club. Bushwacked to the bottom of stage 3, and after a scramble up, I found it laying in plain view, so I covered it up with a rock. Likewise, I found the final stage pulled out from its hiding place and out in plain sight. Good thing that Quest Master tied the ammo box down. Surprisingly, the contents of the cache were intact. I thought it might have been muggled since it was pulled out to the end of its leash. Thanks for a great cache, along with showing me a superb swimming hole!

Our second of 4 on the third day of our annual OSP Caching trip from Eastern PA (You know - Microville Lebanon County). Klatch and I found our starting park location and it looked like an easy beginning. Up the road and an easy find for part 1. For some reason I had never looked behind me on the way up. After I entered the coord's, faced the direction to go, and saw the view... yep, another QM! Off we went and the 2nd was also an easy find. Although it was cloudy - picture taking time! Off to 3rd and the easiest QM find ever - because it was laying in the open with the lid half off! I saw Nellsnake had a no find on this part. Seems the cache contained: Cards w/ coordinates, a moldy bugle chip snack and an empty candy wrapper. I guess a rodent got a whiff and pulled it out of hiding. Maybe this container needs replaced as everything seemed sticky and it will probably happen again. Got rid of the smellables and Klatch re-hid the contained as best he could. Off to 4 and an easy find. A quick re-hide as we wanted to check out the sports area. A beautiful spot and a lot of picture taking. Thanks QM for yet another great cache. TNLN

Out today with Lostandfound2 for a day of caching. We visited this cache on the other site a while back and knew it was good enough to do again!

Some serious clean up needs to be done at the waterfalls!! It's a shame how people can be so disrespectful to such a beautiful place!! It takes all kinds!

We planned on making it down to Camp Carmel for the event, but between all of the kids activities Friday and Saturday, we didn't make it until Sunday. We passed everyone coming out from what sounded like a great time. Well when plan A fails, try plan B. So, we decided to get 2 of the local caches. This one was on my list from day one. I love this area, but had never been to most of the places Quest Master took us to today. We parked near the swimming hole so that we would get all the uphill stuff out of the way early. Stage one was found right on, and it was hidden well. We then headed to stage two. The view is awesome! Those wind mills you see are right above our house, so we spent awhile picking out houses, and farms we could recognize. Stage three was fantastic! You can't see these rocks from the road to camp, and they are so close. Again, the view was something else! Stage four was the only familiar place we went to on this adventure. This is one of the most beautiful places I know of. We found the cache, and again, the numbers were right on. After signing the log, we headed down to the waterfall. There was several other people enjoying this peaceful spot. We took alot of pictures, and our youngest discovered catching crawlfish! She had a ball, and was soaked when we were done. Thanks again Quest Master. This one was all, and even maybe a little more than I expected!

2nd of 6 Quest Master cache adventures in the Fayette-Cong for me today, while the rest of the Nellsnake team was out of town for the weekend. I parked at the suggested coordinates and was able to find stage 1 very quickly nearby. I had an inkling of where stage 2 might be hidden, and after plugging in the coordinates to stage 2, my suspicions were confirmed. I enjoyed a vigorous hike up the hill and enjoyed the view from all directions before going in to find the cache. Again, this stage was found fairly quickly. As I got to the vicinity of stage 3, I could see what the attraction was and I stopped to enjoy the view for a bit. There were a couple of black hawks circling around scavenging the area. Then, out of the blue, I heard a helicopter in the distance, and its noise got louder and louder. Suddenly, the black hawks circling got overshadowed by a big Black Hawk…a military helicopter flying through the valley. I figure the pilot must have caught sight of me photographing him from the overlook, as he abruptly turned around and hovered in for a closer view. I retreated a little ways into the woods—it was a bit intimidating to be staring down an attack helicopter with 50-mm guns pointing directly at me. Anyway, he left after a couple of tense minutes. After all this excitement, I almost forgot to look for the 3rd stage. I did spend quite some time looking for it and even decrypted the hint. I found the object of the hint, but the cache was nowhere nearby—plundered? After using the cheat to plug in the coordinates to the final stage I hiked over toward it and came across a large group of young adults taking rock rappelling lessons on the cliffs along the way. In the region of the final cache, the number of potential hiding spots was very large, but I eventually honed in on the container as the GPSr settled. After signing the logbook at ~12:15 p.m., I watched a family swimming at the water hole and wished I had brought my suit. Thanks for showing me this neat area in the middle of nowhere and providing me with an exhilarating hike, QM. This cache is at the top of my list of most memorable cache hunts! My adventures continued at Iron Center.
