This was the first geocache hidden in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It's located close to a remote location known locally as "Chinatown". There is a small monument here that has some Chinese writing on it. I have been told that this place was once a campsite for Chinese laborers who built railroads is this area. If you pay close attention, you will notice that the route into this place sometimes follows a very old (circa 1915) railroad grade. I have also been told that this "camp" was the subject of a 60 Minutes story. I don't know if any of these stories are fact or folklore but they add a bit of intrigue to a very nice hike into this beautiful spot. Enjoy!

Directions: You can get to the cache from Aukerman Road (T337) which is a right turn from Route 381 about 2 miles north of Jones Mills, Pennsylvania. There is a small parking area located 1.0 miles up this road at 40° 6.193, -79° 18.104. Locate a gated jeep road in the back of this parking area and follow it to "Chinatown" at 40° 5.535, -79° 17.552. The cache will be found nearby.

Warning: There is no sign for Aukerman Road. This narrow road is rough dirt and gravel and its condition is unpredictable. There is no winter maintenance. It may or may not be suitable for some vehicles and/or drivers. Sometimes you can make it in an ordinary passenger car without difficulty and at other times it can be challenging for a four-wheel drive. If you or your vehicle cannot handle this road, find a safe place to park somewhere along the way and hike it. Take care not to block the road or any access gates.

Was out and about with the grandson today. He just loves this stuff! We hiked in from camp run road and met some people on thier way out and we talked about the history of the area, she grew up in these woods and remembers 5 stone markers at one point. After finding the pond and exploreing around this peaceful spot nestled in the woods for awhile, my grandson said "ok, where is it?" I pointed in the right direction and soon we were checking out the goods, he's getting real good at this!! On our way out we met the preset land owner who told a few stories about the place, some true and some not, he told us with a smile.
Great day to caching in the highlands. Thanks for the memories Johnny!

This cache was found WAY out of its hiding spot by Antaries who was out hunting for bear. It somehow managed to migrate the whole way down to the parking area which is more than a mile away. I'm guessing that it must have been the work of a muggle who found it by accident. It's reportedly in decent shape so I'll be getting it back out there ASAP (hopefully this weekend before the shooting starts).

Found this one at 11:45AM. My friend and fellow cacher, JimBat, was along for the hike since he had already found this one. What a cool area! We parked within .4 miles and enjoyed the walk down to the cache. We checked out the statue and the pond for a little while before I started my search for the cache. Man, my GPSr had me all over the place. JimBat had a good laugh watching me walk around in circles! I finally found it and opened it up to check out the contents. I took a Halloween themed deck of "Bat" playing cards and I also took the "Yep, The Old Rubber Chicken" Travel Bug (or is it a HitchHiker?) I left a "Kasgro Rail" screwdriver/level and lighted pen set. Signed the log after reading many of the entries. Quest Master mentioned in the logbook that there was something worth seeing 1-1/2 miles up stream at the source of Camp Run. So, having done a few QM caches before, we knew it would be worth it and decided to make the trek "up the creek". We were not disappointed! Yet another beautiful area that I would have never found had I not started cachin'! Had a great time on a beautiful Fall day! I've been wanting to do this cache ever since I first heard of geocaching. I can't believe it's taken me so long to go after this one!
Definitely one of the best! Thanks Johnny!

I had a number of things on today's agenda. Maintenence visit on my Paths of the Dead (Boots) cache; done. ICV Trail cache: Done. ICV Trail Unplugged cache: Aborted. I had started up at the northern end of the trail and had ridden south until the water hazards prevented my hybrid from getting any further. That's OK because Chinatown was part of my backup plan.

Except that I had forgotten a copy of the cache description. Instead of taking the advised Aukerman Rd. approach, I came up Camp Run Road. I found a place to park at the top of the hill and started down an old logging road. The sign said "Private Property" but it also granted permission to walk along the trail, care of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

The trail didn't take me where I wanted to go so I started bushwacking, eventually coming down toe the cache site. I searched for a while and then my batteries rand out. Fresh batteries suddenly had me searching in a new spot 50 feet away, where I found the cache.

I never saw the pond or the monument because I came in from the opposite direction. I didn't even know I was looking for a pond because I didn't look at the cache pictures in advance. Well, Kyrie hasn't logged this one yet so I'll be back eventually.

5th of 5 caches today over in the Laurel Highlands for the whole Nellsnake crew. After nabbing our second Lonely Cache of the day over at Treasure Island, we forked over a personal record-setting $32 to fill up the Outback's gas tank on Rte 381 on the way up to the parking location for this cache. With the tank running on empty, we were getting skittish and didn't want to risk running out of gas in this remote location. For some reason I thought I kept hearing dueling banjos in the back of my mind as we were driving along Aukerman Road. We knew we were on a Quest Master cache hunt when we passed an illegal dump site on the way. We were able to make it to the suggested parking spot without too much trouble, only bottoming out once on the final uphill approach. Nellsnake crew members #2 and 4 waited in the car while #1 and #3 had a somewhat muddy but scenic hike over to Chinatown. In some areas, the "jeep trail" was pretty much a running stream. Although we had to contend with some thorns along the way, we managed to select a route that kept us fairly dry the whole way and avoided the major water hazard. We enjoyed the dam area and then walked over to the cache, which was fairly easy to spot. The cache was in good shape. We signed in at about 5 p.m. but didn't make any trades. We then made our way back to the car--a nice one-hour round trip excursion along the scenic creek. Thanks for showing us this interesting area and thanks for a nice cache, QM!

I was with kfinders, ekimdam and non-geocacher Dan for a mid-PA geocaching day. This was our first cache for the day and Dan's first cache ever! What a great way to start the day. Really cool area. Thanks for taking me there!!

Location, location, location and this Cache has it. The whole hike in is filled with the wonderment of history. Has anyone translated the Chinese Monument? It looks to be something about sacred ground and ancient curses, good or bad is hard to tell because it has been defaced. So tread lightly. We had to look 45 minutes for the Cache. It is safe and dry. We had the right size trinkets. Good and Safe Caching to all.
