"Horeb Cemetery" is located in Jefferson Township on State Route 279 in Jackson County...Like many other early communities, the area once included several homes and a school...The Horeb United Presbyterian Church founded in 1838 is all that remains today...
In the center of the cemetery that wraps around this scenic old church is a memorial to the men who died in the Civil War and never made it back home for burial...A large monument is erected with a plaque that reads: ..."In memory of the brave and loyal sons of Jefferson Township who died in defense of their country and sleep in Southern Graves (1861-1865)...God rules in the affairs of men...To the patriot, the call of country is the voice of God." The early settlers here were of Welsh descent...Names include the Evans, The Jones, the Jenkins, The Hughes...The cemetery is full of excellent huge old markers...The list of those that rest in peace here is a who's who of pioneers for this area... The Welsh-American Heritage Museum is located in nearby Oak Hill, Ohio...In 1818, six families set sail from Wales to the U.S... After a long and wretched journey across the Atlantic Ocean they hired covered wagons for another long and hazardous trek across the Alleghany Mountains to Pittsburgh...There they placed their meager possessions on crude rafts and journeyed down the Ohio River...After traveling 250 miles they ran out of provisions and tied up their rafts near the French Settlement of Gallia County where they were made welcome for the night...As roadways were being built into the Jackson County area...They slowly made their way to the Horeb area...Farming, making iron and manufacturing clay products became the three leading occupations of these Welshmen and their descendants... The cache is located near the newer section of the cemetery...Do not look high, look low, but it is hanging not laying around...Cache is a camouflaged large pill bottle and includes a construction worker and a policeman...Bring a pen for the log book... |
