Grassy, Fairly Level ground.
Harrison Township in Scioto County, Ohio was organized in March of 1832 along the valley of the Little Scioto River... Settled as early as 1798, a number of early pioneers found homes here, erected mills along the river and worked the land...Many of the pioneers were German or British in descent... You will find this one at Mead Cemetery...It is the resting place for many pioneers...Several members of the Mead Family are buried here...192 members of the Mead Family were recorded in Scioto County in the 1850 Census... Today the Mead name marks the township road the cemetery is located on, and a historical church and school nearby... Mead Road at one point nearby is actully one of two dams for a small lake...Mead Lower Lake saw it's lower dam breach in 1996 flooding and heavy rains...The Lower Lake was never re-filled...The Meads buried here are part of the English immigrants that settled in various parts of Ohio in the early 1800's... Also among the pioneers to locate here were the Duvendacks and Hasselmans of direct German descent...Several members of each family rest here... The first mill in Harrison Township was built in 1804...The dam was rebuilt in 1836 by an old settler named Oldfield...The mill was purchased by Silas Dixon in 1850...He and his sons George and Noah ran the Flouring Mill into the 1900's...They added a Saw Mill in 1866...Silas, his wife Mary Vanderford (1805-1884), and the two sons and their families have their final resting place here... Tragic children's deaths are part of this cemetery too...Little Mary Williams lived just a month in the 1930's... Wendell Collingsworth lived a year in the 1950's... Maintained by the township today, this final resting place for pioneers who worked the river nearby, and hunted and farmed the wide open land is well worth the stop and glimpse at history and a time when life was hard, but good... Cache is a log only... If you see a Rose, you are close...Cemetery is open dawn to dusk... |

Open Log: Unrestricted When I got out of my Blazer in route to the cache I saw a sheet of paper blow out into the road. My Blazer is somewhat of my office on the road and is cluttered with papers inside everywhere. I figured this sheet must have fell out when I open the door. I walked over and picked it up. When I turned it over to read it, I noticed the paper was a partial printout of the cache page. Hand written in large letters was the phrase "Sorry about that Mr. Bloodhound" As the hair started standing up on the back of my neck, I waited for Rod Serling to step out of the weeds and welcome me to the Twilight Zone. Onward to the cache I went, and found that Ohio Rancher and Co. were behind the antics.(Ha Ha) There for a second I thought I had searched for my last cemetery cache. (Spooky) Anyway, congratulations to Ohio Rancher for the FTF! Thanks Gem and North for a great cache.
