Wear good shoes. Hide is near the parking area which is concrete, but, the area is along the riverfront and can be muddy at times...
"Old Man River" rolls past where you will find this one... "Riverside Park" is a recreational area located along Portsmouth, Ohio's riverfront... Amphitheatre, Boating, Fishing, Playground and Picnic Activities are located West of the U.S. Grant Bridge... Boating, Camping, Fishing and Playground Equipment opportunities are located East of the new bridge... A "New" U.S. Grant Bridge towers high above the Ohio River and surrounding area...Completed in 2006 at a cost of more than $30 Million Dollars, the span connects Portsmouth with South Shore, Kentucky... The steel-based cable stayed bridge replaced a suspension bridge that was built in 1927... Locals call a path along the river at the eastern edge of the park "The Woodlands"... Fishermen hang out here so bring your pole and tackle box... Campers are down the way... Near the trail head you will find it...You could actually walk from here to Kentucky in 1940 when the Ohio River remained frozen solid for two whole weeks.. This hide is within sight of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Levee which has protected the city from "Old Man River" in a rage many times... Constructed after the devastating 1937 flood which inundated Portsmouth, the Flood Wall-Levees and Flood Pumps comprise a Flood Defense System that is maintained by a tax levy that has never failed to be renewed in it's history... It is estimated the Flood Defense System has saved downtown Portsmouth $250 million in damages since it's construction...A Walking Path is perched atop the levees with views of Shawnee State University... The "Flood Wall of Fame" features stars painted along the outside of the flood wall, just above the boat launch area west of the bridge... "The Stars" are autographed by successful people from the Portsmouth area including famous ball players, opera stars, performers, scientists and musicians... The "Portsmouth Murals" are painted on the inside of the flood walls facing town, and tell the history of the area from the Shawnee Indians to present day... If you are quiet you can almost hear the caliopes of the Paddleboats and the churn of the Sternwheelers from an era goneby...Sternwheelers and Paddleboats still pass by here going to and from Cincinnati and Marietta for Regattas, and occassionally stop...The Mississippi Queen passes by, but only once in a blue moon now...They have been replaced with Cabin Cruisers and River Barges... This section of the Ohio River is part of the U.S. Coast Guard's Huntington Port, and is the largest inland Port with more than 100 barges in a 24 hour period passing along shore here... National Power Boat Races were held here in the 1970's and early 1980's as part of Portsmouth's "River Days" Festival... A tragic boat crash in 1979 killed a driver... Portsmouth still holds "River Days" each Labor Day Weekend with musical shows in the riverfront amphitheatre, a huge parade through downtown and a midway with rides... Come find the cache, then come back and visit "Old Man River" during the festival for some great entertainment, food and fun... Cache includes Two Army Men, a Ball and Log Book... |

Open Log: Unrestricted I enjoyed the boat races years ago. This is a good hide in a quiet area. If you try this one it would hurt to cache in and trash out.
