11/5/02 THE CACHE IS EITHER MISSING OR BURIED BENEATH AN APPARENT ROCK/DIRT SLIDE. I'LL GO BACK WITH A SHOVEL AND METAL DETECTOR TO CHECK IT OUT, AND RE-ESTABLISH THE CACHE AT THE SAME SPOT OR NEARBY SOON. MEANWHILE, CONSIDER IT MISSING AND UNAVAILABLE! (barrington)

Oatka Creek Park is located on the site of a gypsum mine at Garbutt, NY that operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and artifacts of the mine operation are still present. This cache is located among some of the old mine diggings and closed shafts hidden in the woods at the northern end of the park near Oatka Creek. The cache consists of a green-painted 30 cal ammo can containing the usual array of goodies, including some Red Rose tea ceramics, glass marbles, screwdriver and bits, and Penny even donated one of her tennis balls for other cache retrieving pooches. The cache is located within a network of fisherpersons trails, about 30 feet from one trail and 50 feet from another, so no bushwhacking is necessary. It's wooded, but my Magellan 315 was getting 5 or 6 satellites in the area. See the clues for parking coordinates.

Well, if they were all easy to find, the game wouldn't be as much fun....

This was to have been my third of the day. After finishing up Isabel's Treasure I thought I'd knock a couple off in this park.

It was a nice hike in using deer trails. I heard a fox and saw several deer moving around. I also saw several huge puffball mushrooms. I wish I could have figured out a way to carry them.

I got back to the area of the cache and the GPSr said I was three feet away at one point. I searched the area thoroughly for 30 minutes and then sat down to decode giveaway clue 1. After searching another 10 minutes I tried clue 2. I tried for another half hour and even called home to see if there were any hints in the logs before admitting defeat.

It looks like someone else has been out here recently as well since every loose rock in the area had been turned.

I dropped an email to Barrington and he said he'll try to check on it as soon as he is able, but for now I'm thinking this one is MIA (I have to keep telling myself that since my stubborn ego won't let me admit I couldn't find one!)

Thanks for the hike and I'll be back for the others in this park.

I decided to do this cache while the rest of my family was getting ready to attend our annual family Labor day picnic. You would be surprised how long it takes for two teenage girls and my wife to get ready. LOL Anyways, I needed to relieve some stress and walking is a proven fact that it helps. As I was walking out the door, Chi(our dog) started barking and running around in circles. There was no way I was gonna leave without him. ( He is an addicted geocaching dog!)LOL After the short drive from home to the parking coords, Chi and I enjoyed the nice peaceful walk. My gps lead us right to the cache. I took the travel bug, left tools for ghouls (pumpkin carving tools)and an unscratched lottery ticket. I signed and dated the log book, then put the ammo box back as found.

Oh yeah, if a fellow goecachers happens to strike it rich, (LOL) make sure to instant message me and let me know of the good news.........

3rd of 4 finds today. 11:30 A.M. After doing Grapevine, I walked back to the car to get my cache printout and realized I had to walk right back down the same road I had just come out of. I need to read these things closer before I head off onto the trail. Real nice trail to cache. Got close, looked around and finally spotted it after walking around it for a few minutes. Nice hideing spot! While logging in GPS said 3 feet. Took/left nothing. Barrington, thanks for these 3 hides in a very nice little park.

We were at the spot but couldn't find the cache. Then realized that it was below us. Took the Moon Muck and left some beads. We enjoyed hiking in this area.

Nice cache location, Barrington. Decided to start my New Year off right & headed out for 2 of your caches bright & early this morning. Left the house about 7:30 am, 19 degrees outside. A really nice area & trails. Had no problem getting to the cache other than a little slippery footing due to some fresh snow. Cache is in great shape & my gpsr had me at 5 ft. when at the cache. Didn't have anything small enough to put in the cache, (it's packed with goodies), so I took nothing & left 2 wheresgeorge bills. Left my mark in the log book & headed off to Deer Crossing. Great time. Thanks. --Gimpy--

I parked at the suggested place, and was about .3 mi away with no visible way of going that direction. I met a couple coming down the trail, and they said the path going that direction was a mile down the trail. I said heck with, as it was starting to rain also. I drove down, but decided to check out another parking area I knew of. I found a place to park much closer to the cache, and was able to get a much more direct route to cache, that involved walking across the creek on rocks. Got my feet a little wet, but I got to the cache. I was short on time as I had to be someplace so I made brief entry in the log, and left. I didn't take anything, or leave anything. I wish I had noticed the CBS mystery radio CDs. They would have been cool!

Well, another first, this time I was not first! What a picture perfect day! It would have all been so perfect if only I would have gone in via the suggested route. Not me, I made it very interesting, but not recommended, glad thoes people do not have a big dog. I thought I had your methods down, but ended up surprised about the actual cache placement. Thank you, had a real good time.

Very nice place to hide a cache. I would have thought more people would have come for this as it seems to be one of the better ones for scenic beauty as well as the great fun.
Caron was first to locate the cache due to me looking in the wrong place. You did well on this placement. I took nothing and left two "wheres George" dollars for logging.
We signed the book and placed the cache as we found it. I thank you for the great fun!
