Significant altitude change -- not for the faint of heart. Alternately, there is an route with less elevation, but you will need to study a topo map and bushwhack. Take extra batteries for your GPS.
This is a second cache located in the Erwin Hollow State Forrest. But be warned, that this one is harder to find. There are several ways of getting to this cache. 1) It can be reached by fairly good trails if you park at (N42 10.547, W77 6.033), cross Erwin Hollow creek which is about 8 inches deep in May, and then you will have to hunt for the start of the trail, which is an old logging road. Route 1 will require climbing about 600 feet in elevation and then decend about 200 feet. Route 1 is only about 1.1 miles, but there are several intersecting trails – so you might actually go a bit farther than that. The elevation changes will definitely make it seem farther than that. There are 3 other routes that require less elevation change. Study the 7_1/2 minute topographical map (Corning) if you want to try to figure out one of these routes. One requires only about 300 feet change in elevation, but requires considerable bushwhacking! Don’t get lost, take an extra set of batteries for your GPS! This is an interesting historical feature at (N42 10.709 W 05.584). This is on the shortest bushwhack route. This feature can also be arrived at by fairly poor trails also for those who want to hunt it down using other routes. A point with a good view is at (N42 10.880 W 05.875). This is on Route 1 and at the intersection of one of the trails that requires less elevation change and only a small amount of bushwhacking. The cache is located near a bend in the trail. You will come to a double stump that is about 3 feet high. The cache is located about 40 feet north in a hole made by a fallen tree (covered with leaves). See the photos. (Additional foliage has grown up since the photos.) Why should you want to go to this cache? There are a few coins in it and a couple of trinkets. It also happens to contain 3 copies of a CD – you’re welcome to take 1. Less than 1 person in a billion people has a copy of this CD – and the other 999,999,999 may know something that you don’t. Listen to at least a part of each of the 3 tracks and let me know what you think. Unless you have a very unusual musical taste – the main reason to go is for the challenge of the hunt. I don’t think you will find this one an easy one. . . . . . . . . . . . . . P.S. May 15 update: The alternate starting place does not require going through the stream -- although the trail might have an inch of mud -- and less direct. . . The Topozone.com maps are good. |

I think Craegs and us are crazy! After doing the "Erwin Hollow Overlook" cache, we decided since we are in the area, we'll do this one to. We imagine the up hill hike is a challenge when it's warm and dry out. We did it with about 4 inches of snow on the ground, at night in a snowstorm! We thought we would never get to the cache. Craegs thankfully found it within 10 minutes. We took the Hot wheels car and left a bag of gold nuggets, a globe key chain and a Cache In/Trash Out bag. We didn't talk much on the way back. We just wanted to get to the SUV as fast as possible. This is one adventure we won't soon forget. Thank you for this challenging cache.

We kept hike up and up and up and then down. We thought we would never get there. BUT.....this is the kind of caching adventure that we enjoy. The cache was well hidden, but the coordinates were very good and we found it easily. We swapped wheresgeorges and re-hid the cache as some dark clouds were rolling in. It never rained, but it sure looked menacing. Thanks for the workout!]

1st of 6 today. Found at 10:45 AM. This ws probably the hardest although not the longest. Started on the trail and then lost it due to the heavy folage and ended up bushwacking the last half mile through some pretty thick stuff. Took 1 1/2 hours to get there. Came back a differnt, better route and it still took 55 minutes to get back to the car. Took a few minutes to find cache. With all the folage on now, it sure looks different than in the pictures. While at the cache, GPS bounced between 3 and 40 feet. Signed log. Took copy of CD, left $2.00. Will let you know what I think in separate e-mail. Listening to it now as I write this. Thanks for the hide. Now onto Erwin Hollow Overlook.
