A pretty drive in the Catskills.
The Chestnut Creek Covered Bridge was built in 1976 as a Bicentennial project. It crosses Chestnut Creek in Grahamsville, NY. It is a steel stringer structure with the look of a town lattice truss - 40 feet long with 2 lanes. Unlike many other bridges I've seen, this one has extended sidewalk type paths so you don't have to walk through the road portion. See separate virtual cache GC6F77 - "Covered Bridge Tour of Sullivan County" covering four nearby bridges as a companion tour to this conventional cache. This bridge plus those four include all the covered bridges in this county through some of the finest Catskill scenery. The red track on the attached map shows that route and the black shows this cache. This bridge is 4 1/2 miles from that route. If you're interested in doing a little swimming, fishing or relaxing, start at this Chestnut Creek cache bridge and finish up at Beaverkill where there's a public beach and picnic ground. There are no dogs allowed in the public picnic area. But you can take your pet to all of the bridges themselves. The coordinates mark the cache's hiding spot which is near the bridge. The encrypted hint is a dead giveaway so don't peek too soon if you want a challenge. WATCH YOUR STEP. If you find yourself slipping and sliding, read the hint - don't get hurt. The bridge experience and finding the cache is more important. PS - That's my wife holding our dog to the left in the picture. What a couple of troopers! The picture is not a spoiler. Initial "stuff": Medium Rubbermaid container - clear 9" x 9" x 4" * Swingline Ministapler with staples * 2-AA Coppertop Alkalines * Water gun * Speed wheels car * Packet of note cards and envelopes |
