Cache is close to a scenic parking spot in Scioto Trails State Forest. Take the main road into the state forest off of Rt 23, then take the first right at the top of the hill.
Take time to enjoy the view here. It is quite close to the site of William Hewitt's cave. A monument dedicated to him, erected in 1842, stood at the entrance of Scioto Trail State Forest. As a hermit, he lived for fourteen years in a cave near what is now the park and surrounding forest. Hewitt died in 1838 at the age of seventy after becoming a local legend. It is said that he died as a result of eating several large meals in succession. Eventually, the cave was whittled away by highway development and the monument was moved. It is now located beside the log church at the Scioto Trail campground.

FTF! Had to make a trip to Chillicothe to look at some geological features. Had just enough time for one cache stop, so I chose to make it a FTF. Coordinates were great. Took TB's left two firemen. This area is sort of a testiment to the somewhat unpopular practice of prescribed fuel reduction burning. If one looks close they can see the evidence of the burn on the stumps and fallen trees in the area. One can also see evidence in the green floor of the forest area after the burn as the new growth thrives on the added nutrients. Being a firefighter myself who has seen more than enough wildfires, I am glad to see fuel reduction burning under controled conditions rather that the direct confrontation with mother nature in fighting wildfires.
