Come one, come all to the Syracuse Geocacher's Picnic!

On August third, a picnic will be held in Clark Reservation State Park at the large pavilion in honor of Geocacher's everywhere!

The event is a 'pot-luck' style picnic, where we ask that everyone bring a dish to pass. We will bring supplies for the grills.

There are currently six caches in the park, and we are contemplating a few GPS based activities. Stay tuned for more details.

In conjunction with this picnic, I am trying to get an open discussion started in regards to setting up a New York State Geocaching Organization. If interested, please come a little early (10 am) as the picnic will start at 12 noon.

Please note that the area has been extremely buggy lately. We will try to pick up a few citranella candles for the pavilion area, you may want to bring along bug-spray and/or additional candles for yourself.

To give us an idea of the expected turn-out, please post a 'note' to this cache page letting us know if you'll be attending and what you plan to bring.

I promise this is an event you won't want to miss!

7/22/02 Update:

I forgot to mention costs. There is no cost to attend the picnic, though if everyone brings a dish to pass, there should be enough lunch for everyone! Donations are gracefully accepted to cover the cost of the pavilion, trash removal and the custom event patch (keep reading!)

There is a $5 per car parking charge. I hope this will not discourage anyone from coming, just remember the funds go to maintain and improve the park.

Please bring your FRS radios. This was a great idea that I saw on the Wisconson Geocaching site, so we'll try to follow their lead and use channel 12 (code 1?). As they so aptly put it: bring them along so you can cheer on or taunt the other cachers!

We will have two activities along with the six caches in the immediate area.

Activity #1 To demonstrate the accuracy of the GPSr (or lack thereof) we will be providing a flag-stick, flag material (paper and markers)and a set of coordinates at the pavilion (for one of the adjoining grassy areas). Decorate your flag with team name, logo, colors, etc. and then place it in the ground when you think you've found the exact spot. Once all the flags are placed we will disclose the spot and see just how close you got! We were hoping this would be a good activity for kids, but if you are so inclined you can make your flag ahead of time. Just take an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper and cut it in half. Then fold in two and you have your flag.

Activity #2 When you arrive at the picnic you'll be asked to sign the event logbook and a name-tag. There will then be a grab bag full of puzzle pieces available. Take a piece (or two for large groups!) and head over to try and fit your piece in with everyone elses! There are 64 pieces to the puzzle, which will contain all the clues needed to find the cache for the day. Inside this cache you will find custom patches with the event name, date and location. We're hoping this will become a tradition with all NY events! (Due to the cost of the patches, we do ask that you trade an item for the patch or leave a small donation in exchange.) There are 100 patches, first come first serve!

Hey! This was number 100!!

What a great time. The weather was perfect, the park was great and the people at the picnic were excellent!

Really enjoyed the meeting. I'm hoping to meet even more geocachers from this great state by having a state geocachers club.

Thanks Dekaner and J-Ra for the activities. I must say that finding the puzzel/patch cache made my day. I wasn't the first......But with a flock of geocachers emassing in the general area and one particularly competative geocacher surging past me :) ..... I found the cache. I did a little I found it number complete with dance while Rippy Yelled out Huckel Buckel Beanstalk.

Thanks for a very enjoyable day!!

I was first to find the puzzle cache (if you don't count all of the others
to find it before me, such as DxChallenged!). Came home, and crashed
on couch for 2 hours to recharge from fun and long drive. Thanks for
fun, and see you in October!

Sorry I had to wait until the last second to make a follow-up post, but I was unsure as to what time I would be able to get there. I have a (hopefully fast) business run I have to do for work and plan on getting there quickly afterwards if all goes well.

If for some reason I get backlogged please forgive me and save me a dog or two! =)

We will bring paper plates and napkins. We also have our cooler, which will be filled with ice, but we may need another. Anything else a good picnic needs that I'm missing?

Spoke with the patch manufacturer today, and she said that we were still on target to get our patches.

They had all been through the machine and now needed to be cut and have the backing and edges sewn on.

Looks like upinyachit will not be attending the picnic. :( Don't get us wrong, we would have loved to attend, but I have decided to drive the family to Colorado for vacation instead. We have family and friends out there begging to see us. It's been four years since our last visit to this great state. (I'm sure everyone will be amazed of how big the kids are now!)

Oh yeah; now we can hide a cache ON TOP OF PIKES PEAK; don't know what we'll call it yet, but when we do, Navicache will be the first to know!! (Not that many of you out here will be able to go and find it, but I'm sure there are future Navicachers out there that will; like family and friends!) Hee hee!!!!!

We will also be searching for the closest caches with the 80911 zip code!!!!!!!! (Cache puppies by the Cache hounds, for example.)

This is a link to where we are going. One of the most amazing places in the world...

Maybe the next picnic!

We will have computer access while we are there; maybe we will write about our adventures in the forums.

Our family had a blast at our first Navicache picnic in
June, so with it being my husband Duane's birthday, he would like to celebrate it with what our family enjoys most;
caching and meeting fellow members. We are planning a
mini vacation ourselves. After work on that Friday, we
will be heading out to Syracuse for the weekend. Until then, we plan on doing as much caching as we possibly can to make the time fly by. LOL

We will surely hit the caches placed out there!!!!!

See you Saturday at 10!
Don't know what we will be bringing, but when we figure it out, we will let you guys know!

I won't be able to bring a quilt to this one (I have 12 going right now and need to finish them up before sewing interferes with goecaching :) but perhaps a quilt project could be planned for the club......the first just one state quilt. I was approached to do a 9/11 project.......so something like that or one to represent the many great parks that are happy to included geocachers in their list of visitors.....

Will bring the crew minus Foo (she hasn't attempted a hotel yet).

Looking forward to seeing many of the faces that were at the Rochester, NY picnic.

I'll think about what to bring along and repost once I have an idea. This sounds like a great way to get a motivated chat going on ways to bring NY area Geocachers together as a group. Doesn't hurt at all that there are tons of caches in Syracuse that I have not gone after.
