The nine o’clock gun has been a sound of Vancouver for longer then anyone can remember and if listening closely one can hear it anywhere in the city. Every night around a dozen people will gather, plug their ears and wait.

The cannon is a 1816 navel 12 pounder and was brought to the park by the Department of Fisheries in the 1894 to announce to fisherman the 6:00pm Sunday fishing closure, replacing a stick of dynamite.
The 9:00pm firing was later established as a time signal for the general population.

This cache has a daily viewing period of 1 second and is thus recommenced you arrive 5-10 minutes early (don’t want to miss it).
The “signing of the log” is done by taking a picture of you and/or your GPS with the cannon and the flashing lights or the resulting smoke.
