Near the top of the Veten summit on the Eldsfjellet mountain, ca 261 meters above sea level.
Eldsfjellet was an important part of the old norwegian beacon system, where beacons were lit on mountains along the coast to warn about enemies or danger, much like the "Lord of the Rings - Return of the King" movie. That is probably where the mountain got its name (The Fire Mountain, roughly translated). Although Varden (324m) is the highest summit, Veten offers the best view. That is why the beacon was on this summit, and there are still remains of an old stone cabin there. Go up there on a clear, sunny day and you will feel like you are standing on top of the world, the only obstruction being Varden in the east. You may not want to bring very young children for this one, as the cache is on a cliff. An adult should face no dangers here, however. The cache is out of sight from the summit. Please cover the cache well when you're done, or it will be visible from a distance. The shortest path starts at: N 60 34.465 E 005 02.065. Follow the sign towards "Veten" when you reach the small lake. You can also start from: N 60 34.929 E 005 04.018 and over Varden towards Veten. Or make it a roundtrip. The Firemountain (sroib # 31) is on the same mountain, so you should consider doing both on the same trip. There are also other alternative routes up to Eldsfjellet. |
