Find a Hamfest - this is a virutal, LOCATION-LESS geocache!
A hamfest is a fleamarket for amateur radio operators, who are also called hams. No one really knows how or why the name "ham" was first used for us, but there are many opinions. If you'd like to learn more about ham radio, go here: ARRL - American Radio Relay League http://www.arrl.org These days, a lot of hamfests are combined with local computerfests, like the one in Rochester, New York that we're using as an example for this virtual, locationless geocache: Rochester Hamfest -- May 31 to June 2, 2002 http://www.rochesterhamfest.org/ At a hamfest you will find ham radios, shortwave receivers, scanner radios, old vacuum tube radios, antennas, testing equipment, and tons of miscellaneous parts for fixing and building radios. Now go find a hamfest to play this geocache! Here are the rules to log this virtual, locationless cache: 1. Upload a photo of a hamfest you visited - specifically to log this cache - that shows you and your GPS in the shot. We need to see your amateur radio callsign. If you have a callsign nametag, hat, jacket, or t-shirt, wear it proudly! If not, please make a small sign with your ham callsign to put in the photo. 2. Record the GPS coordinates for the hamfest in your log report. Use the special latitude-longitude boxes that appear in the log report form. You can take a reading in the parking lot, at the main building, or at your own hamfest fleamarket table. 3. Please, only one log per player, and each hamfest can be logged only once. Please read ALL the logs to be sure you're the first and only player logging your hamfest. That's it. Now you can go play with the new gear you just picked up at the fest. Tell us about all about your new radio toys, or the gear you sold, in your log report. Let us know whether, and how, you use ham radio as a geocacher. 73 from Anton, N2RUD & Jim, N2STK Syracuse, New York |
