During my travels around North Fork Provo river basin, I've always been fascinated by the dark silhoutte of The Dell, looming above the cliffs in the middle of nowhere. The 10,000+ ft plateau of the Dell has over a square mile of evergreen forest. No roads, no trails there. In summer, you might find some campers and fishers at Hidden Lake, tucked in on a wooded bench on the Eastern fringes of the mountain, but hardly anybody ever visits The Dell proper.

This spring, after a careful study of the area, we finally skied across The Dell with Team UINTA. From Norway Flats road, we dropped into Boulder Creek below the yurt, ascended the ridge separating Boulder Creek from North Fork Provo, and followed it North up into the Dell. The snow conditions were great, spring crust covered with an inch or two of overnight fresh powder, and it only took us 3 hours to the top of the Dell. With so much daylight left, we opted to explore some more and skied off the Northern "bow" of the Dell down to Beaver Lake, reascended through a cliffband, and dropped to Fire Lake, before returning to Boulder Creek. To say the truth, the cliffs overlooking both lakes would make a more picturesque location for a cache, but what's done is done.

The cache is a large ammobox placed at the highest point of The Dell. It should be accessible year round. The container is full of trinkets, toys, coins, and genuinely useful things for a backcountry person. It was primed with Spike Lee the Cach-U-Nut, a travelling gamepiece in our local cache game.

Found following a solo hike from the Crystal Lake Trailhead. Would have preferred some company, but none was available.

On the way I left the trail a bit past Weir Lake, descended into a swampy meadow, and found an unexpected trail on the far side. Followed the trail to the east side of The Dell and then ascended off-trail about 0.4 miles to the summit.

In the absence of a snow base I had to do a bit of climbing to retrieve (and later replace) the cache. The container and its contents were in pristine condition.

On the way back I headed toward the pond that lies between the summit and Weir Lake. I picked up the trail near the pond and followed it all the way back to Duck Lake.

Thanks for the cache. TNLNSL.

Got this today after a failed attempt Sunday. My first FTF and first Cach-U-Nut! This one was a toughie since it is such a long way.

Started out with snowshoes on the North Fork of the Provo River Trail with jringgen on Sunday. Shortly after it crossed Boulder Creek, we hung a sharp left and headed up the hill to the ridge that runs NE all the way to "The Dell". We followed the ridge to about 1.2 miles of the cache and turned around. Even though it was snowing when we left Salt Lake, it had cleared by the time we got to the trailhead and we had an absolutely gorgeous day. The start of the ridge was kind of brushy, but not too bad. This section can be avoided by going up the minor "valley" just to the NW of this ridge at the expense of deeper and less consolidated snow. If you're snowshoeing you probably want the ridge, if skiing, you probably want the valley.

I came back by myself today and made it all the way. It took me about 4.5 hrs to get to the cache. The last 1.2 miles of unbroken snow were really hard because the snow was kind of mushy by that point and clumped up on my snowshoes, so it felt like each foot weighed a couple of extra pounds. I spent 45 min messing around at the cache site and then 3.75 hrs to get back to the car for a total of 9 hrs!

On Sunday it was -7 to start. Today was beach weather at +11. Both days it warmed up nicely once the sun came out.

I spotted the cache right away, thank God. However, I'd had a nagging worry for the last week or so regarding this cache. It was placed in April in a heavy snow year and we have had hardly any snow at all this year. What if I got there and couldn't reach it? How frustrating would that be?! Well, sure enough, the wire I needed to detach it from was 1-2 feet out of reach. It took several tries, but I was able to climb up and get it down.

Once it was down, I couldn't get it open because it was frozen shut. It took quite a few kicks to loosen the seal. But once open I found it in great shape. It was very hard to get it back in the tree since I needed one hand to hold on, but I did manage, although it is a little lower than before I think.

Rescued spike, left half a geode. TFTF!
