A cache placed a short distance away from the highest point in New Jersey!
High Point in New Jersey stands 1803 ft above sea level. The cache itself is at an elevation of around 1630 ft. I hope you won't be too disappointed. :) High Point State Park is on Route 23, about 7 miles north of Sussex and 4 miles south of Port Jervis. It is in the northwest corner of New Jersey. The park is open from 8am to 8pm. (Park closes earlier during the winter.) There is an seasonal admission fee. I paid $7. On a hot day, bring your swimming trunks for a dip in the lake afterwards. The south shore of Lake Marcia is a popular inland beach with lifeguards on duty. Once you enter the park, head on over to the lower parking lot just past the monument. From there, take the Monument Trail (red and green blazes) to the north. The cache is just under a mile from the end of the parking lot. Terrain on the trail is moderate. The trail follows a ridge going northeast from the high point. There are some mild ups and downs and it is quite rocky in some stretches. Once you get to the cache location, you'll have to climb down the ridge a little to find the cache. Please be careful because there is a steep dropoff nearby. Also, do study the area before going down because there is an easy path to get there. I don't want to hear stories of anyone falling from the boulders, okay? :) The cache is an army surplus ammo container hidden under boulders. It contains a few toys and also some items traded out from other caches. Please sign and date the log book, and re-hide the cache in its original location once you're done. GPS reception seemed to be fine at that location. In case there are any problems, use the hints and the pictures to guide your search. Other approaches are possible with varying terrain. The cache location is not far from a trail junction leading to the Cedar Swamp trail. In addition, you could climb up to the ridge from the Appalachian Trail. That would be a steep climb, however. |
