A DEVIL OF A HIKE By MrMom, MrsMom and Goo. 26 May, 2002 N43*08.202 / W079*02.622
This is our second cache in the Lower Niagara River Gorge Series. This series begins at the Northern end of the river ( downstream ) with "RAPID ART" followed by "A DEVIL OF A HIKE" and ends with "RAW POWER!" As you progress South ( upstream ) the level of difficulty increases. All hikes are near very steep cliffs without railings on well used trails. For your safety stay on the trails. No bushwhacking here. Follow waypoints carefully. Although we are experienced nighttime hikers, the last two caches must not be attempted at night. My seven year old daughter completed all hikes with minimal complaints. Please also visit our Upper Niagara River Series now nearing completion. All readings were taken with a Garmin 176c and a Garmin III. Averaged accuracy's are better than 30 feet.

The cache is located within Devils Hole State Park in Niagara Falls NY off The Robert Moses Parkway. Park near and read the sign at N43*07.998 / W079*02.839. Walk Northeast to descend 410 steps and enter The Devils Hole. On the way out, you'll feel him burning in your legs and thighs. Stay on the lower trail. On the way back, sit-down at N43*08.095 / W079*02.858 for a "breaktaking" view. The trails for the most part stay dry. The Mighty Niagara awaits you.

The original contents of this cache include:

2-pack chap stick
Travel sewing kit
Garden/plant stake
Peanut butter crackers
Practice golf balls and tees

This was our first geocaching experience after recommendations from a friend. We chose this one since it's practically in our back yard. A fabulous hike. We got turned around a few times when the PDA lost sync with the bluetooth GPS receiver. After this, we'll definitely be looking into one more fitting for the job.

We passed the cash at least four times. Every time, I kept looking toward the area thinking, "now that would be a great place to hide a cache." But the GPS kept leading us in circles.

Walked up the trail a little way and saw three enormous fish and a bunch of babies in a small watering hole. Monique fell and wracked her back on a rock, but seems to be doing okay. Probably a little stiff tomorrow.

Finally got the GPS working and tracked the site. Well hidden. Great site. Fabulous view. And the tree made a good seat for my 11 year old.

The 401 steps are vertigo on the way down and pure exhaustion on the way up. A fabulous first experience.

It was a beautiful fall day for a hike... No complaints getting in and out of the gorge, but getting to the cache was a bit of a challenge :) I would love to hear the story of how you 'stumbled' across this spot! I had a lot of fun with this one - thanks!

Dragged the last Navicache finder with me on the way to other caches. I was telling him on the way down the stairs that I used to carry cases of beer down to Devil's hole in my college days. And they didn't have those nice cases of cans with built in handles back then either! I found this after about 5-10 min. on site. Definately one of the more overgrown and little used sections of the gorge trail. TFTC, Mr. Mom.

Logging here a month after completion. I had never been on this side of the stairs hiking before. Not too bad going down, but coming back up proved how out of shape I am. Found cache after about 15 minutes of looking. I was surprised at how well my GPS did down here in the gorge too. TFTC!

A beautiful day for a long walk/hike. Lots of people out on trail.

Went to this one with only the printout, camera and GPS. Thought we wouldn’t be long. Once on the trail we realized how “close” the next one was without having to redo the stairs, and then another one or maybe 3 more in total!! Wish we brought the water. Found this one at 12:30 AM. Took nothing, left nothing.

Every step going down, I was thinking "I'll have to go all this way back up". There was quite a bit of rain last night, so the rocks were slippery. Took a butterfly refrigerator magnet and left a plastic picture frame. This made a wonderful break during a trip returning home from a trip to Canada. Thanks.
