This cache is sited quite close to Canterbury, just off the Roman Watling Street, or the A2 as it is known today. It is on the slope of a wooded hill, beside the North Downs Way. As you explore the footpaths in this woodland, you will discover great curved earthen banks and ditches, in concentric arcs. These are what remains of a large Iron Age Hill fort, which was occupied in pre-Roman times by the Belgic people, who came from what is now Belgium and northern France as invaders. They and their descendants settled and farmed, occupying hill top strongholds such as this. In 54 BC, this is thought to have been the scene of a battle between Julius Caesar and Cassivelaunus, leader of British resistance to Caesar's army. Despite the backing of the Cantiaci, as the local tribes were known to the Romans, Cassivelaunus had to surrender. Roman slave manacles have been unearthed here, so perhaps the spoils of battle included the taking of slaves.
After you find the cache, a short walk along the footpath that branches uphill from the North Downs Way, between the cache and the suggested parking place, will quickly bring you amongst some of the huge ramparts. |
