This place is on what used to be the West shore of the Northern entrance to the Wantsum Channel, which until the 15th Century separated the Isle of Thanet from the rest of Kent, and provided an important short-cut by sea between the Thames Estuary and the English Channel.

This is a spot with layer upon layer of history. The most prominent landmarks are the twin towers of St Mary's Church. The church dates back to 669 AD, and is ruined. The towers, however, have been maintained as a navigational aid up to the present day. The church was built on the site of a Roman fort, REGVLBIVM, which guarded the northern entrance to the Wantsum Channel. At it's Southern end stood the much larger and more famous Roman port, settlement and fortress of RVTVPIAE, known today as Richborough.

In April 1943, Barnes Wallis stood here with Wing Commander Guy Gibson and watched an Avro Lancaster of 617 Squadron test his bouncing bombs by dropping them onto the calm waters of the estuary, in preparation for the famous "Dam Busters" raid against the dams of the Ruhr Valley.

Start your search from the car park near the King Ethelbert Pub. The cache can be accessed from the sea wall that runs beside the car park. The cache is not hidden anywhere on the grounds of the fort or the church, as your GPSr should quickly tell you.
