While traveling to this cache, you will be passing through the earliest mining district in the
Western Cascades of Washington. Not long after 1871, a mini gold rush occurred up Silver
Creek, which you follow most of the way. You will pass the old townsite and many mines.
By 1873 a trail had been hacked out of the wilderness up Silver Creek where the original settlement
of Silver City was developed. This town was short lived and was virtually a ghost town by 1880.
After a renewed gold/silver rush in the area, the old Silver City site, was re-filed as Mineral
City, in mid 1892, and consisted of 15 blocks. Including at least 2 stores, 2 saloons, and 2 hotels.
While this was the original pack route up to the Monte Cristo gold rush area, the railroad ended up
going the other way (South Fork Stillaguamish totally bypassing Silver Creek), and this area died out,
again.
There are many mines to explore, some extremely dangerous. Have fun exploring and hiking. Even
possible to mtn bike. Cache has stuff in it, and a cache camera for pics of your visit. And remember,
if you continue past this cache, you will reach Silver Lake, Poodle Dog Pass, and some other lakes
up in the mountains here. If you decend the other side, you will reach the historic Monte Cristo area.

How to get there:
Turn off Highway 2 onto Index/Galena road, continue past Index, and shortly after the Howard Creek
Bridge turn left over a cement bridge over the North Fork of the Skykomish river. Make the first right
(you are currently in the old townsite of Galena) and drive until whatever you drove will not go any more.
Start hiking past a huge landslide where the trail becomes easier and continues up the valley.
Cross the creek at Mineral City (no bridge), hike a bit more, cross the last vehicle bridge, and continue
up to a big open area, maybe a mile past the bridge. Get up to the next level above trail (old cat track).
