Bethel by night

This is a very difficult multistage night cache, however, you have (self design) multi options deciding difficulty level !! See hints below. Check "WILLIE THE WOLF'S PITS" cache page, a must read, first.

Do "Preserve Willie The Wolf's Pits" cache first. After logging Willie's cache, continue on his white glint trail back toward car [ do not backtrack ] and look sharp for the start of my RED glint trail. Follow red glint trail to double (one over other) glow tacks and then look for info micro container with vertical orange reflector.No need to get wet here. Plastic implement(s) or devices are hidden near micro container to help facilitate access. Provisions are in place for severe icing, if nessesary. Up to 6 inches of snow not really a problem. Replace info micro exactly as found. Device is self re-setting. Coordinates found here, get you to the 2nd stage, another information micro..
Look for a reflector. Information found at 2nd stage, a well hidden 35 mm filmcan, get you to the starting location of the final leg, also a red glint tack trail. Follow this trail to the double (one over other) glow tacks and look for actual cache container, a 50 cal amo box with green reflector, this, to say the least, an easy find. For easy back to car, study info provided inside amo box. A secret bonus find code (similar to some of my other caches) a 3 letter code on a small strip of aluminium foil...is hidden at one of the micro info. locations.It is a bit hard to find, I need my hints to find it, but then again, am getting a bit senile? Email me this code for "Top Dog Credit."

Holy Bleep! THAT WAS AMAZING.

I've never had a "favorite cache" until now. Sure, the Magellan contest win was an action-packed, adrenalin filled frolic. Schnuffle's Silver Treasure and the Berkshire contest were tremendous hikes with the hopes of amazing prizes and thrill of being just ahead of the competition...

But this... ...this is in a class by itself.

It has all the elements of a great geocache: we start out with the night (always thrilling), perfect "Flow" (for info Google "flow psychology"), it challenges without discouraging (but rather motivates), has a "new" technique talked about but not delivered before, puts the GPS to good use, is thought-provoking, and gets the cacher to rise above him/herself such that you feel proud.

It was so friggin' tough. I can't believe I stuck it out. It's perfectly executed. Just when I hit the threshold of thinking I'd never get it--I got it!

The perfect balance between challenge and reward.

It's also apparent how much thought, time and effort went into designing and placing it (and I should know having set nearly half-a-dozen night caches myself!) Thank you Zurcher!

First, let's start that I was attempting to do it before it was listed/approved. The TB placements flagged that there was a pending listing and Herb emailed the local folks with a "heads up". Between the cache names, TB's, and a map I was able to figure out the area and realized a night cache reflector trail should be possible to stumble across.

Well I was able to do the easy one in short order--and I stumbled across something suspicious. However I had NO information to go on.

Was I looking for a container? An info micro? A reflector trail? None of those were anywhere to be found!

Ultimately I sorted it out with a lot of diligence and a little luck (although technically luck = prepartion meeting opportunity; so I was prepared and the opportunity was obviously there).

Then I lost it. Multiple times! Ironically, I found one of the required tools before I found that I'd need it while I was "lost".

Then I got back on track and started to put things together--what's amazing is this is just the first stage!

Now I had some info, but again, no idea what to look for at that spot. I hunted and hunted. Having started this whole process after finding the other cache at 8:30, 'twas now 11:00 and I was 45 minutes from home on a weeknight. I'd searched the area over and over and it was time to call it quits.

So, figuring I might be looking for a final container there (still no cache listing as obviously delayed in approval) I returned in daylight after emailing Zurcher my woes.

I spent probably a good hour searching with the sun to no avail. So much for my second trip.

Fortunately, I had an appointment nearby where I was able to access my email and Zurcher had fired off copies of the listing to me and others--G_.com be damned!

This clued me in that I was only half-way there in my whole process and gave me the info you see above. Cool! Now I had something to go on. That didn't mean it was easy though--my work was cut out for me.

Following the info, I ended up at a point looking for the start of the red reflector trail and had a devil of a time. When I picked it up, a few reflectors later I got stuck. I searched around, but wasn't getting anywhere. Finally I decided to take a break, sat on a log and pulled out my water and a granola bar after dimming my headlamp, only to look up and see... Is that a red spot!? I brightened my headlamp but it didn't change. I was frozen in place as I didn't want to lose sight of it... I was perplexed that it didn't brighten when I brightened my headlamp--so I turned it off. The red spot WAS STILL THERE!? Then I heard the voices. I was looking at the tail light of a car through the woods in somebody's DRIVEWAY! Oy! It went dark when they drove off... Drat! Here I was it would be a classic, take a break and find a revelation only to have my hopes dashed.

I then continued on, hoping with every reflector I found that it would be a double--only to learn I'd have to find yet another one and continue on.

Ultimately I achieved that incredible goal--and turned the FTF prize into a 2nd-finders prize 'cause I ended up completing it with advanced info.

All in all a perfectly designed cache that made me joyous!

After I got back to the car, I celebrated with a "victory" ride (after all, 'twas after midnight) and tore home in half the time the trip would normally take with the joy of Rush's "Freewill" coming on the radio. Hattertown Rd. was a blast, but coming onto the multilane section of Rt. 25 seeing a cop "advertising" ahead of me meant free reign to tear it up. A beamer behind me followed suit, then we trade spots back and forth until exiting for the Merritt where I immediately lost him on the turn...(lame...)

All in all I spent from 8:30-11:00 on day 1, another hour during daylight on day 2, then from 9:30-11:45 or nearly 6 hours, not counting travel (45 mins. one-way).
