Located at the Upper Adit of the Kitanning mine site.
This mine was first located in 1900, It eventually would comprise of nine claims. This is an altoids tin cache. Originally containing a couple 'easy streets' tokens, an origami swan, and logbook and pencils. It is sealed in a ziplock type bag and also contains a magnet, but it is not a magnetic cache.
You will be passing a neat old cedar shake cabin along the way at about 1,300 feet of elevation.. Just to the left (East) and around the cliff from the cabin is the lower tunnel. You will be heading above this tunnel at around 1,350 feet, to an elevation of 1,850 feet. Here you will find the upper tunnel. The cache is to the left (East) of the upper tunnel outside tucked into a crack in a vertical rock face.
The metal mined here was copper, extracted from the ore minerals chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite and pyrite. You can find samples in the adits if you are properly prepared. Both tunnels are relatively safe, but any underground exploration can be hazardous (but really fun).
Much assistance in finding this mine can be found in Vol.1, of 'Discovering Washington's Historic Mines'.

Turn off Highway 2 towards Index/Galena. Drive to the Trout Creek bridge, (set your altimeter here for 950 feet.) and continue 1.5 miles further to a small turnout on the left side of the road. The elevation of the parking area is 1,050 feet. Set out away from the river, up the hill across the street.
