A nice hike or fun bike ride into Washington's mining past to a secluded mine with a small waterfall in front of it. There are more mines to explore further up the trail, even. While up finding this one, make sure to allow time (up to an hour for exploring and checking things out) at the Sunset Mine which you will pass on the way up. The cache is hidden near the main workings of the Non Pareil Mine up trout creek road. Standard ammo can cache, has log, various items, and a cache camera for pics of your visit.
Check out these links: (If you follow the Sunset Mine loop route, it is a neat side trip. Be careful.) http://www.2drx.com/2002/Sunset/DetailMap.shtml http://www.2drx.com/2002/Sunset/ Driving: Drive US-2 east from Monroe to the exit left to Index. Drive on the Index-Galena road about 5 miles to the small signed bridge which crosses over Trout Creek. After a few hundred feet, turn right on a dirt road. (high clearance vehicles only) Keep left initially, then drive up about 1.5 miles (stay right at the intersection of the Iron Mountain route) to a large open area by the river. The concrete foundations of the Sunset Mill will be on your left, elevation 1400'. It is possible to drive further up the road, but you will need a good 4x4. Continue up the road past the Sunset mine a tad over a mile, to where the 4x4 track ends at a large washout. Follow the footpath past this spot and begin looking up and left, looking for a granite tailings pile that reaches the main trail. Climb up. Main trail about 1860 feet EL at this point, the Mine's main (lower) adit at about 1920 feet EL. I usually only drive about halfway to the Sunset mine, then mtn. bike the rest of the way. IT is a really fun bike ride back to your rig that way. For passenger cars, I would suggest parking near the trout creek bridge, or drive less than 500 feet up the dirt road to the first Y. Park along a wide spot. |
