During the 19th century in an area that stretched from Northern Kentucky to Southern Ohio the landscape was dotted with numerous iron furnaces. Known as the Hanging Rock Iron Region, this area was well stocked with the natural resources needed for producing usable iron; iron ore, limestone, and timber. Near this spot once stood Center Furnace. Center Furnace was built in 1836. At maximum production this furnace could produce 16 tons of pig iron in a day. What makes this particular furnace interesting is the fact that this furnace is believed to have been the only furnace in the U.S. of its kind and era that was ran by a woman. Nanny Kelly served as the Iron Master for Center Furnace in the furnaces last years of operation.
The furnace is gone all but for this lone stone sitting by the highway.

They need a historical marker here. The area was once populated. The furnace was state of the art for back then. Easy stop and grab. Thanks for more history.
