Pitt Lake is the second largest lake in the region, even longer and wider than Indian Arm. It is the largest tidal lake in North America -- ocean tides push up the Fraser River and then up the Pitt River to Pitt Lake causing the water level to rise and fall with the changing tides. When tides are flowing, water moving in and out of the south end of Pitt Lake can create strong currents so care must be exercised. The southern end of the lake is partially blocked by sandbars and it may be necessary even for paddle boats to follow the dredged channel to the east shore before heading north.
This caching journey will take you on a 9 kilometre (18km return) paddle along the eastern shore of Pitt Lake. The cache is hidden at the Raven Creek Marine Park campsite which is the southern most campsite on the eastern shore. If you're into an overnight trip, this campsite is a fantastic destination -- it's a very secluded spot with three tent sites and a pit toilet. Each of the campsites enjoys a beach frontage and the view north from the campsite area is nothing less than spectacular. There is a large gravel beach at the campsite that should be accessible by small powerboats. In years gone by, railroad logging occurred in the Raven Creek watershed and remnants of rail bed can be found. The rotting pilings south of Raven Creek were used as booming ground. As you follow the shoreline on your trip to the cache, keep a watchful eye out for wildlife. It is not uncommon to see mink and river otter swimming along the shore, and harbour seals are sometimes seen at the southern end of the lake basking on logs on hot sunny days. There are many predatory birds in the area -- while placing this cache we saw two large bald eagles and several hawks. Bears and cougars are also in the Pitt Lake area so be especially mindful if you have young children with you. The only way to reach this cache is by water. There are no roads or trails to this area. Canoes can be rented at the south end of the lake at Ayla Canoes www.aylacanoes.com Free day parking is available at the boat launch at Grant Narrows Regional Park. There is a fee for overnight parking but it is quite reasonable. Overnight parking is behind a closed and locked park gate and is monitored by a nearby live-in caretaker. The cache is a small 350ml Lock & Lock container. It holds only a logbook and pencil. No trading is necessary for this cache -- the location is the reward on this adventure. Have fun and enjoy your journey to Raven Creek Marine Park! |
