You will find Hemlock Lake Tucked away in northern Indiana County. Getting to Hemlock Lake is 1/2 of the challenge. If you're not familiar with the area you should look at the map before you start out. Follow Hemlock Lake Road to the park's eastern access area. Begin your hunt by taking the gated access road. Good luck. |

Well Rock, I finally finished off your Tour de Parks. It wasn't easy, though! It happened that I found "You Won't Cross this Bridge" with plenty of daylight left for more abuse. Bring it on! This hunt was doomed from the start. I had the coordinates programmed into my GPS but I didn't have the cache page. I must have forgot to print one out. I also didn't have one of my specially prepared maps. This could be very bad since I would be navigating unfamiliar back roads in no man's land with a mapless GPS. I seriously considered bagging it but I had a near-full tank of gas that could carry the Mighty Colt for 300+ miles if necessary. I followed the arrow. That's what I did. I went a very scenic route by accident through Rochester Mills and Smithport. There are some beautiful spots in Indiana County! There is still an awful lot of snow in the neighborhood of Hemlock Lake. I'd say about 8 inches or more still on the ground. I balked at driving down the park road because it was covered in snow and there was a sign that warned "No Winter Maintenance". The Mighty Colt probably could have made it down and back but I really didn't want to be the idiot that got stuck somewhere that he shouldn't be driving. I thought seriously about bagging the hunt at this point. I was looking at all of the snow and considering that I probably couldn't find the cache in this mess. The GPS said 3/4 mile. There was plenty of daylight left and I needed the exercise. Bring it on! I screwed up right at the start by picking a wrong road. I followed a gas well access road that looked promising because it was going in the right direction and had evidence of vehicle and foot traffic. It finally dead ended at a gas well about .3 miles from the cache. I thought again about bagging the hunt and going back but I told myself that only a sissy would do that. Bring it on! So I went off-trail through 8 inches of snow in the beautiful woods of mixed hardwoods and hemlocks. The snow kept getting deeper and I was thinking that I had no chance of finding the cache but really that didn't matter. I was having a great time and a great adventure. I thought that it would be a shame to log a frowny when I was having so much fun. It didn't have to happen. I walked right up to the cache and found it easily. It's in great shape other than having a few trash items inside. TNLN and back to the car the easy way. The lake was beautiful! There is a doomed snowman standing out in the middle of it. Thanks for the tour! Johnny.
