At this site perhaps the most successful Confederate Calvary General was parloed. General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men were released by Union General Canby on the bluff above the Tombigbee River at Gainesville, Alabama.
Gainesville was one of the most important towns in Alabama in the antebellum era because of Black Belt cotton production. The Tombigbee River along with a spur of track from the Mobile and Ohio RR made it quite the economic success. Today, not much is here. However, there are a number of sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places around Gainesville. Near the cache site there's a little gazebo, water pump, and an Alabama Historical Marker about Morgan Horses. To log the cache first find the micro, a painted pill bottle. Next, you need to look at the Forrest monument and email me two things: 1) what adjective describes Forrest's followers and 2) what Confederate General was also parloed at this spot. If you prefer, you may instead take a picture of you beside the Forrest Monument. Logs without either a photo or emailed answers will, unfortunately, be deleted. This is the first cache of any sort in Sumter County. |
