Yosemite Lake Dump?
| I've been to Yosemite Lake numerous times over the years, but this must be the first time I was out this way. That's one of the things I like about setting caches; it gets me out to places I would never have visited.
With that, I welcome you to the Yosemite Lake Dump. That seems an appropriate enough name as you will see.
I'd have thought regulations and laws would prevent the placement of a dump this close to a water source, but I guess I'm wrong. I believe it is free to dump here as I was unable to find anyone in attendance collecting disposal fees. That's a much better price than the Merced dump. And with as much trash as there is out there, it must be with the approval of those who run Yosemite Lake. So, it must be okay!
While I was out there, I saw quite a variety of refuse: piles and piles of tree trimmings, a ton of bricks, tons of tree trunks, tons of cinder blocks, tons and tons of cement, at least eight refrigerators, tires, speed limit buoys, dozens of light fixtures from auditoriums, and a multitude of other sundry items. I'd surely say that the people who have dumped here - and those who have allowed it - haven't any consciences. You should see it; the place is a dump!
NOTE (2/10/2004): I have discovered that the Merced County Parks and Recreation Division is the government agency responsible for Lake Yosemite. By their inaction, they are allowing the denizens of Merced County to use this as a cheap alternative to the Merced Landfill. This recent article in the Merced Sun-Star provides some details and contact information (Peggy Vejar, interim deputy director, parks and recreation for Merced County, 209-385-7426) to voice your concerns.
Find parking as close as you can. The dump begins at the following coordinates and ends near the cache.
|
| N 37° 22.807
W 120° 25.293
|
| During the summer months, you may incur a nominal "per car" fee to enter the lake. It was $5 when I placed the cache. During the winter, the fee is waived.
The cache is a camouflaged ammo box about 12" x 4" x 7". No bushwhacking required, but the cache may be a little tricky to find. If you don't find it within ten minutes or so, please refer to the hint.
| Hopefully, the placement of this cache will prompt a cleanup of this embarassment to Lake Yosemite and the city or county of Merced and get some controls or blockades in place to prevent a return of the selfish individuals responsible for this mess.
