An easily accessible bird watching trail just off Highway 244 west of La Grande.
I never knew this place existed until I was driving by one day headed to another cache and saw the sign. I decided I'd have to come back and explore the area some more, and see if this was good caching territory. Well, here it is! The Bird Track Springs Trail on the Wallowa Whitman National Forest loops through a level floodplain of the Grande Ronde River. It got its name when a bird left its tracks in the wet cement of a retaining wall around a nearby spring. There is a pleasant little Forest Service campground right across the road from the parking area. The container is a small ammo can which contains a logbook, pencil, and some assorted trading items. Access is off Interstate 84 Exit 252 at Hilgard. Drive Highway 244 west for 6 miles to the parking area on the north side of the highway. You can also park across the road at the campground too. GPS said it was .24 miles to the cache from the lot, but the trail to it is not straight (please stay on the trail!). The Forest Service pulls the interpretive sign down in the winter. |
