The listed coordinates are for Bear Creek Lake Park where this adventure takes place. Finding the cache will require some online research and mapwork at home and a journey in the park. Depending on your choice of transportation, i.e., walking, biking, horseback, or golf cart, and the route you select, you will cover somewhere between one and four miles roundtrip. Most of your travel will be on improved trails, but there is some bushwhacking in open terrain that is required.

The skills required include researching benchmarks on the Internet and plotting some bearings on a map.

The names of three benchmarks (two triangulation station disks and one tank) are provided. Also provided are three compass bearings, but not in relative order:

LAKEHURST MUN TANK
LINDO
GREEN RESET
Bearing 150 degrees true
Bearing 275 degrees true
Bearing 55 degrees true

To find Waypoint 1, go online to www.ngs.noaa.gov/. Click on “data sheets” and research the coordinates for the above benchmarks. Then, plot the three sets of coordinates and the correct relative bearings to achieve an axis. Two are all you really need, but just for the heck of it, three are given. Do a little more research to find the name of the benchmark at the “axis” and then go “walkabout”.

At Waypoint 1 find the Station Mark that is stamped simply _ _ _ _ _ _ 1977. Disregard the two numbered reference stations that are nearby. All three marks are described in the benchmark details. Within five feet of the correct Station Mark is a micro in a film canister (Waypoint 2) that will provide the coordinates for the exact location of the cache. In case this micro is missing, you can go eastward a hop, skip and a jump and find a duplicate at the base of a small tree that is on the brow of a small rise above a paved path.

The cache is an ammo box with rewards and logbook. “To the victor go the spoils,” but please leave no trash and record your trade. Thanks. Note: The original contents of the cache include a genuine Frias Ranch arrowhead in waterproof match container found in 1966 and a handmade walnut card case by TundraChief (see photo).
