The cache is located in an Essex County "park", near the Passaic river. The area is a flood plain and a canoe could be required during certain times of the year. I walked in to place it and it should be walkable most of the time. It can also be approached by boat, as it's close to the river. The terrain rating is assuming worst case scenario. During very dry seasons, it's more of a 2.5.
There is no trail leading directly to the cache site. To reach it, you'll cross several streams and drainage ditches. Along the way you'll have to deal with mud, ticks, hungry mosquitos, thorny underbrush and lots of poison ivy (but no hills). Since the area floods periodically, the cache is hanging from a tree above what appears to be the high water mark. To log this cache you must reach it and sign the log book. Simply spotting it doesn't count. Because of the thorny brush and poison ivy in the area, wearing long pants and hiking boots is a very good idea. In wet seasons, high waterproof boots may be required, or in very wet years, maybe a snorkel and flippers. Also, be sure to mark the waypoint of your vehicle. This is an easy place to get lost, because everything looks the same. Finally, during hunting season, wear bright colors. Judging from the ubiquitious tree stands, the place is popular among hunters. There are also a lot of ATV tracks, but you won't see many other users. It isn't the kind of place most people would visit for a pleasure hike. |
