A cache on top of beautiful Mission Peak overlooking Fremont and a good chunk of the Bay Area. Everyone who has driven through Fremont on I-880 or I-680 has seen this mountain... now's your chance to conquer it! The terrain almost enters into "hard" territory. The trails are well-kept but it is a long climb to the top. |

Open Log: Non-commercial use only I dropped by this one on my Thanksgiving Day hike up the peak in 2007. It was very windy, but that made the sky clear. This is the only Navicache near my usual haunts.

My boys and I decided to take one of the dogs for a walk today and ended up here. Took us a couple of hours to get to the top, pretty good time IMO considering their ages of 3 & 5. Didn't trade but we appreciated the views, they also enjoyed the tubes at the top. Thanks very much for the cache, we really enjoyed the location.

Open Log: Personal use only First time I've ever been to the top of Mission Peak, although I've lived on this side of the bay since the late '70s. Great cardio workout and loved looking through the tubes. TNLN - thanks.

Open Log: Personal use only Found this back in Dec. 2002 with an old friend of mine. We didn't have a gps for this and went off of clues and pics. He found it. Great time of year to go, not too hot too. I have been up here a few times since 2002. Thanks for this cache and website. Brings h2o for this is a kicker hike!!

Open Log: Personal use only Yesterday, I drove out to Mission Blvd, only to realize I'd forgotten to bring the coordinates and my cell phone. I tried to find internet access at Ohlone College, but the library (which is only accessible from the third floor in the back of the building labeled Library only on the front) is closed for winter break. Drove down to the Fremont Main Library, waited a while for a terminal, got the coordinates in 30 seconds, and then drove down Mill Creek Road, looking for a parking lot. The three signs which read Parking is not allowed anywhere along Mill Creek Road are not lying. Reached the end of this one-lane road, figured out how to turn around and drove back out to Witherly Ln. Also no luck there. It was past 3pm, and I didn't have my hiking boots anyway; so I came back today, after 3pm. Didn't see that there were trail maps available. There were at least a hundred people of the hills. Missed a few shortcuts, which meant that I ended up passing the same slower-moving couple three times. First half mile of the hike was very steep, though some young (like 8yo) girl jogged easily past me wearing soccer cleats (I overtook her when she stopped to wait for her parents, who were huffing and puffing even more than I). Got to the top of Mission Peak and worried that the cache was going to take me down the face of some rock cliff, but it turned out to be safely tucked away, just far enough off the trail to be out of view of the other hikers. The views were nice in both directions, though they must be tremendous on a clear day. Instead, the wind picked up, the sun went down, and the light drizzle turned into cold pelts of rain on the way back. Got stuck for 15 minutes at a cattle gate, guarded by two cows and their calves trying to get through the fence to each other. Finally distracted them by using my camera flash and snuck through the gate while one of them snorted at me uneasily. Took picture 24, a Night Sky dial, and a Geocaching pen. Left a Geocaching compass and a mini-Pokémon card.
