Historic Fort Steuben was built in 1786 by the First American Regiment for the protection of surveyors who had been sent by the Continental Congress to map the Northwest Territory, At this time the Indians in the area were hostile.
By February 1787, Maj. Hamtramck had finished the fort and named it after Friedrich Wilheim von Steuben, a Prussian army officer, who a decade before had ably assisted General Washington in the Revolutionary War and for whom the town that developed around the fort was named. In 1989, nearly 200 years later, the first building of a new Fort Steuben went up on the Old Fort Steuben site on North Third Street. It is now 2003, the Fort has been completed, as well as, a new visitor's center. For credit you must e-mail me the number on the historic plaque in front of the visitor's center (it's on the lower right side of the plaque). You must also tell me what building sits between the Fort and Third Street. |

Open Log: Non-commercial use only This was our first ever cache find. We work within walking distance of this one, so we thought we would try it. Kind of easy-we did it on our lunch hour. Hope to find some more tomorrow!
