The cache is located near Terrace Pond, a scenic, clear glacial lake on Bearfort Mountain. It's fairly rugged climb to the cache site, but anyone in halfway decent shape should have no problem. If the weather is nice its a great spot for a picnic lunch and be sure to check out the surrounding trails and overlooks (NY/NJ Trail Conference Map #21 is good to have along).
Park on Clinton Rd at N41.08.795, W74.24.232. GPS will indicate that the cache is slightly over a half mile, but the actual walk is closer to a mile. Bushwacking directly to the cache site is not recommended unless you are a fit and experienced outdoorsperson. The easiest way in is to take the gas pipeline cut up the side of the mountain and turn off on the blue (Terrace Pond North) trail (Note: use the second blue turnoff. The trail joins the gasline near the bottom and exits towards the top. It is the latter turnoff that you should take). This trail should take you to within 100 yards of the cache site. The cache is hidden in a large rock formation just west of the pond (off the white trail). There are numerous small caves and crevices among the rocks, so it may take some time to find the cache without using the clue. Note this section is just outside the Newark watershed property, so no permit is required. |

Just rushing to get some finds before the rain and snow. Saw the new cache listing by BrianSnat last night and decided to get it first thing in the morning. You just know it's going to be good. Parked at the suggested spot and walked in by the candy canes, I mean gas pipeline markers. Heard the hissing of gas at the station. When you talk about a pipeline cut, you're not kidding. It looks like someone shaved a reverse mohawk all the way up the mountain! I followed it up for a bit and met up with the blue trail. Icy spot there. Thought I could just slide across. OOPS!! Not even remotely like Disney on Ice! Then I had a nice hike up the blue trail. Not as strenuous as I thought but it got the blood going. Along the way, the excellent work of the Trails Conference was evident everywhere from the freshly painted blue blazes to the plank and log bridges. I'll renew my membership for sure. After some time, I got to the top of the final ridge and what's that? A lovely frozen lake! Must be Terrace Pond. Switched trails and got as close as possible to the cache. Climbed up onto the rocks and scanned the area for an easy bushwhack. Bingo! I was standing right by a brush-free land bridge that would take me in the direction of the cache. Perfect! Went over there and it was pretty clear where the hiding spot would be. Saw the well-stocked cache all nested comfortably in its nook. (or is that a cranny? ) Took the pocket game. Left a blowfish (I suspect it's some kind of water squirt toy) and some Where's George (http://www.wheresgeorge.com) dollar bills. Thanks and excellent work, Brian and co!
