The cache is in the Great Swamp. Its a very flat and easy hike in. Park at the Lord Stirling Park's Environmental Education Center, on Lord Stirling Rd. Because it is in the swamp, the route can be quite wet in April and May, or after particularly rainy periods, but most of the time the walk is dry and pleasant.
Start at the trail behind the Environmental Education Center. The cache is in a good sized Rubbermaid container. The walk in is an especially easy one, but the flora and fauna in the area are varied and plentiful, making it an interesting walk for nature lovers. Watch out for ticks in season and birders, be sure to bring your binoculars. Several trails lead to the cache site. At times they turn in the wrong direction, but they eventually head to the area of the cache. Please resist the urge to bushwack and stay on the trail until you reach the cache site. Note, the cache is placed in an area that floods seasonally (usually April - May). I believe it is placed above the normal high water mark, so it should be safe from flooding. It may however be surrounded by water at times. If it is flooded, the water around the cache shouldn't be more than few inches to a foot deep, so wading is safe. Again, the flooding is seasonal, so most of the year the area should be dry. Among the contents are a biography of Lord Stirling. Read it, but please leave it in the cache. The Evironmental Education Center is an interesting side trip. Check out the selection of books and trinkets for sale (some would make nice cache items) and there is a well stocked library devoted to evironmental issues. Also, there is a very interesting display on the geological and human history of the Great Swamp in the basement. The Great Swamp is one of the remanants of Lake Passaic, which was a 30 mile long, 10 mile wide lake that once covered this area. |

Open Log: Personal use only
As I approached, there was a couple on the observation deck. I moved slowly in stealth mode. Each step creeked, but they did not hear me. It ocurred to me that I might be walking on frozen swamp. But then thought better of that, even if I was correct. I spotted the likely location, but it was then the couple descended from the deck and headed my way. I took off my orange hat and waited for them to pass. I am pretty certain they spotted me. Oh well . . .

Open Log: Personal use only I was planning to take a break from geocaching after my 200th find but this was such a nice November afternoon that I just had to go outside. Parked at the fishermen's parking lot near the river. The distance to the cache was about half a mile. Followed the small trail by the river for a while until I got to the large trail and from there, it was easy. Very nice day for this kind of walk. The ground was rather dry as it hadn't rained in weeks. Once I got near, I followed the signs of bushwhacking until I could see the cache. Took the Trails Conference patch. Left a small bottle of hand sanitizer, a car, and some Where's George (http://www.wheresgeorge.com) dollar bills. On the way back, I stopped by the EEC. Nice selection of books in the library. Thanks.
