In the Tri-state area, both Maryland and West Virginia have their high point caches. Here is Pennsylvania's summit - Mt. Davis, elevation 3213 feet.

Mt. Davis is part of the 30-mile long Negro Mountain and is the highest point in PA and the lowest high point in the Appalachian chain. The stash is located in the Mt. Davis Natural Area.
Driving Direction
Take US 219 (either from I-76, US 40 or I-68) to Salisbury, PA.
US-219 becomes Grant Street.
Turn right (if from I-76) or left (if from US 40 and I-68) onto Ord Street 0.7 mile
Turn left onto S-669 2 miles
Turn right onto SR2001 1.4 mile
Turn left onto S Wolf Rock Road 5 miles
Follow the sign to the PA High Point and its parking lot
Alternatively, you may also use either the Savage Road (SR2003) or the Mt. Davis Rd to access the S Wolf Rock Rd. The driving condition during the winter months should be OK except the worst a few days.

Attractions
The High Point is about 500 feet from the parking lot. There is a small geology exhibits at the actual high point. An observation tower is nearby. Other attractions include:

Shelter Rock (??? see my 11/11/01 note)
High point outlook (N39 46.925', W79 10.854')
Baughman Rock and Spring (N39 47.598', W79 10.250')
A picnic area at nearby Mt. Davis Road.

The cache
The container is a clear Rubbermaid with a blue rim on the lid. It is barrel-like and has a size of about one gallon. Locate the head (N39 47.120', W79 10.594') of the Shelter Rock Trail, and then follow your GPS to the cache. The trail is blazed with BLUE marker. Stay on the trail until you are within 150 feet to the cache. This is very important, you will know why when you begin the search. The initial contents include a key-chain databank, a microphone-earphone combo for computer, a few original software CD-ROMs. Also, there's some band-aid and alcohol swabs just in case for minor injury. The container is not covered with anything, but you need to be very close to spot it.

We came out on this very fine fall day to seek out this new cache and to try and capture the travel bug. We had a very nice walk down the Shelter Rocks trail and met Trailguy about halfway to the cache. He saw us with a GPS and knew right away what we were up to. He reported that he and his consort had looked a long time for the cache and that they had been unable to find it. He also told us that we had just missed the Garmen (& Women) Group. Rats! Anyhow, We found the cache in less than 10 minutes. We were five experienced cache hunters and luck was with us. We split up and swarmed over the rocks when we got into the right area. Eric found it and brought it out of its hiding place. Garmen had already taken away the bug but we were able deduce its whereabouts from their log entry. We exchanged treasures, sealed up the cache, and went off in hot pursuit of that bug. Eric and I had been here before exploring these rocks about 10 years ago. We think that these rocks are Shelter Rocks but we are not 100% certain about that. I want to check at Mike's Shelter Rocks coordinates to see if there are other rocks there. This is a great place for a cache. It matters not at all that there are two caches at Mount Davis. They are quite different. Thanks Mike. Johnny, Eric, Kyle, Jared, & Erin.
