Located in Newport News Park, the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi. A copy of the park map can be downloaded here. Be prepared for a round trip of at least 2 miles.
Newport News offers a multitude of activities for the family with miles of hiking trails, biking trails, arboretum, Discovery Center and more. The shortest trail to the cache will take you through the swamp where you are likely to spot water fowl and other wildlife (we saw two pileated woodpeckers on the way to the site!). Depending on the trail you choose, you will also see evidence of beavers at work as well as Confederates at work (old Confederate earthworks, which you should refrain from climbing). This cache is a regular ammo box. You may choose from many trails to get to the location, depending on how far you want to hike. Closest parking is near the Discovery Center. Difficulty may increase as vegetation begins growing. This area will definitely be teeming with mosquitos by the time summer comes around so don't forget the bug spray. |

Just now logging in Swamp Fire cache. Found it on 08/02/03, but just joining up with NAVICAHE! Long hike and got caught up in a terrible Thunder and lightening storm! What an experience but my nephew was determined to finding it. We took the slinky and mechanical pencil and left a geocaching.com pencil and a tape measure key chain.
