Located in a Wildlife Management Area, this find provides an excellent opportunity to see a wide variety of flora and fauna during your hike. Please be sure to wear bright colors during hunting season (I inadvertently placed this cache on the final day of deer season and was surprised when returning to my car to see camouflaged men with guns).
The Black River (also called the Black-Lamington) is only about 12 miles long and starts slightly north of here near the intersection of Sussex Tpk and Route 10. It meanders south, passing through the WMA and stretches out in a marsh, several hundred yards wide in some areas. The wildlife being managed here includes geese, duck, beaver, bear, fox, and lynx. As the river leaves the WMA south near Chester, it picks up speed heads towards the falls and hemlock groves of Hacklebarney State Park and eventually empties into the north branch of the Raritan river. GPS reception may be less than optimal due to the terrain but you should be able to stay dry. I’d recommend noting your location occasionally to ensure you can return to your car without crossing private property. Cache is a camouflaged ammo can. |

Open Log: Non-commercial use only Finally had the opportunity to go for this cache and so I did. The last time I came here, and that was the winter before last, I was unable to park because there was more than a foot of snow at the entrance to this WMA. This afternoon, I didn't have a problem driving in and parking at the small gravel parking area. Then I took a walk down the path, picking the most likely direction at every junction. Somehow, I ended up in the pine grove and bushwhacked downhill from there. Then the cache was an easy find. Thanks. Took a different set of trails or rather, what I thought was a different set of trails. But I checked the GPS track map and more than half of my route back to parking was the same as the route I took to get there. So it wasn't quite a loop hike.
