A simple letterbox cache located near the original line of the Buffalo & Depew Railway.

At the end of the 19th century, Depew was a village of about 2,200 residents. The two main employers were the New York Central RR and the Union Car Company.
In 1897, The Buffalo & Depew Railway was incorporated. It ran from a connection with the Terminus of the Buffalo Railway's Genesee St. line at Pine Ridge Rd east to Depew on a private right of way that we now know as George Urban Blvd. to Transit Rd where it turned south and then east following village streets to the end of it's line at Burlington Ave. and Ellicot St.
Completed in 1901, it had 7.25 miles of double track, 5 of which were on it's private right of way, and a half mile along Pine Ridge Rd to serve the cemeteries.
One safety feature that the B&D had that many electric lines lacked was the fact that it did not cross any Steam RR line at grade.
The owners of the B&D had plans to extend the line to Batavia, and even Rochester, but were forced to abandon the idea in 1909.
The B&D was eventually merged into the IRC and the tracks were taken up at some point in the 1930's. The IRC was eventually taken over by the forerunner of today's NFTA
The cache itself is actually on the old Lehigh Valley line to Williamsville. There is no parking on this section of George Urban, but is available on the closest side streets.
