The Ganden Songzanlin Monastery (Chinese: ËÉÔÞÁÖË S¨ngz¨¤nl¨ªn S¨¬) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated 5 kilometers from the city of Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) in Yunnan province, China.
According to local guides, the monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province and is sometimes referred to as the Little Potala Palace; it was built in 1679, was extensively damaged in the Cultural Revolution and subsequently rebuilt in 1983; at its peak the monastery contained accommodation for 2000 monks; it currently accommodates 700 monks in 200 associated houses. The monastery contains 3 temples and features an 8 meter tall statue of Buddha. The coordinates roughly mark the entrance to the monastery. The terrain difficulty takes in to account the altitude of above 3200 Meters. To claim this cache do the following and answer two questions by email to the owner: Enter the main hall through the side entrance (opposite of the kitchen). To your left is the wall with the main door (usually closed) on this wall there only ¡°protectors¡± depicted. Continue along the wall to the corner, there you will see a Buddha Painting. Question One: What does the sign above the kitchen entry say in English? Question Two: What is the name of the Buddha or what was the extreme ascetic practice he was undergoing when enlightened? |
