This is a unique Navicache.

State Law mandates that whenever the University of Minnesota uses state money for building projects, 1% of the money must go toward the creation of public art. This is meant to enrich the state's culture. Most of the time, this means the inclusion of a scuplture somewhere on the grounds. When the Walter Library was gutted and renovated in 2003, 1% of the project budget, or ~1 million dollars, was used to restorate the ornate ceilings original to the building.

Whether you begrudge such use of tax dollars or welcome it, come and check out the outstanding, beautiful public art and get your money's worth!

To log a find on this virtual, you must count the number of water sprinkler heads on the ceilings. This is more difficult than you might think.

How many sprinklers are on the first floor in the entryway? Look for the area of the ceiling with gold leaf decoration and the art deco chandelier.

How many sprinklers are in Room 208 on the second floor?

And lastly, how many sprinklers are in Room 206 (Reference Room)?

Bonus question: How many owls along the walls in Room 206 have pupils?

Please do not post the answers in your log. Email them to me or you log will be deleted (see my profile for my email).

No GPS, No Motor, No Map, Found.

Counting the sprinkler heads is harder than one would think.

Nice ceiling, they don't build buildings like that anymore.

No comment on the spending on the ceiling though, not enough space for it. Well, I guess I'll say this, it was a wise use of the required arts spending given that it had to be spent I'm glad it was done on the ceiling.

I was planning on picking up these three caches on a trip to the U of M this afternoon. But after reading the requirements on this virtual I think I'll stick to my original plan. Maybe later while biking, everythings better while biking.
