Overland cache is in the Anza-Borrego desert near the old Overland stage route of the mid-1850s. This may turn out to be a "log only" cache depending on what's left after the first finder. Container is a large sized cinnamon Altoids tin and contains a logbook, a Palm Springs keychain and a map. Cache is on a bluff over-looking Vallecito wash between two ice-chest sized boulders. I approached the cache site from the SW starting at the Well of Eight Echos (N32 53.108, W116 13.043) along highway S2. I think this is the nicest way to reach the site. Is a nice gradual climb of about 2 miles thur a forest of ocotillos. Note that the jeep trail that shows on the USGS topo maps of the area is NOT a designated driving route and is closed to vehicles. It does make a nice trail to walk along however. The other approach is from the north from near Hollywood and Vine (N32 54.430, W116 12.275) in the Vallecito wash. Bit of a steep climb out of the wash. I recommend the southern approach. An interesting side trip is to visit the VALLE benchmark at N32 53.685, W116 11.669. After placing this cache i went on to find the Mud Cave Cookie Tin cache. See waypoint GC2A7. I also spent a second night camping in the park. I love it here. Nice location! Anywhere around the Carrizo Gorge is a nice hike.
If I'd known your Altoids box was getting so full, I woulda brought
something a little bigger... course, that would've meant having to
dig in that soil... not fun! Seems there was more cholla than ocotillo
though...
