Nice hike with mining historical component at Lost Horse gold mine in Joshua Tree NP. You should be there early, so not too many onlookers are around. Look out for the old ore crusher (which is impossible to miss) and have *a close look at it* :)

Best time to start the hike is early morning, especially in summer time (to escape the heat). Hike the 1 – 1.5 hrs to Lost Horse Mine in Lost Horse Valley, south of 29 Palms town.
Have a close look at the old ore crusher and don't touch, destroy, misplace anything – this is a historic site! Look out for snakes and the such. Look for a hidden, but visible (if you're standing in the right spot) blue lunch box.
Take a snack and enough water with you and enjoy the sunrise with a great desert view on the Lost Horse Mountain behind the mining site. Hike back the same way or take the round trip to see a bit more of the environment and some more historic sites.
