It's a Meet-meet-meet-meet... and Greet-greet-greet-greet... a chance to try out a GPS receiver and talk with geocachers about how the sport works. The location is the Lazy E Arena south of Guthrie. After you have tried your hand at geocaching, or answered your geocaching question, feel free to wander the other hands-on booths at the Oklahoma Wildlife Expo. Or, stick around, and give us a hand introducing the sport to hundreds of newcomers!

There will be geocachers on hand to visit with. If you've always wanted to see how the whole thing works, we'll have some temporary caches set up a short distance from the booth, and you can use our GPS receivers. If you are not sure what brand to buy, you can be sure there will be all kinds of opinions to listen to and at least three different brands to try out. Last year, a woman came by the booth and tried out all the GPS receivers, and then went out and bought one of her own that very night! She came back the next day to get some help in using her new gadget.

If you are already a geocacher, stop by and visit! Maybe there are equipment questions that have come up that we can help find some answers for. Or just come by with a good caching story to share... That's what we do at local "meet-and-greets", monthly or quarterly meetings usually held in restaurants. The past two years at the Wildlife Expo booth we have met many cachers from around the state who have rarely (or never!) met other geocachers. No one can truly appreciate your caching adventures like another geocacher!

Even better- if you have several hours you could spend helping at the booth, we would really appreciate all the hands we can get! Last year 45,000 people visited the Oklahoma Wildlife Expo; during the three days of the event 1,400 of them came to the Geocaching Booth! Even if you don't feel you would be good at explaining how to use a GPS receiver, we still need people during each shift to keep the tally and to smile and hand out brochures to the folks who just want information. If you would like to work a four-hour shift or two, contact Donna at 918-669-6644 or at oxley@cityoftulsa.org to set up your hours and get a volunteer release form to fill out ahead of time. Besides the obvious rewards of personal satisfaction and bragging rights, official volunteers do get to park in the VIP parking lot! (Coordinates will be provided.)

Directions: Exit I-35 at Seward Road. Go east 2 miles on Seward; then turn right (south) on Douglas. Go one mile to Forrest Hills Road (a.k.a. "Blind Lemon Road" on some GPS receivers), and turn left (east again.) The Lazy E will be on the right (the south side of the road.) Don't worry- there will be signs to the Lazy E Arena and to the Wildlife Expo, and if you wait until noon, you can just follow the crowd. Or, if you are feeling bold and want to try to avoid the long lines of traffic, try coming in from the east on Forrest Hills Road (see the maps on the page here.) Once you get parked, the Geocaching booth is usually located between the indoor arena and the pond. The coordinates listed are for where the booth has been located during the past two years' events.
